looking for something to protect the bottoms of my trays (rack set up)
    #27297210 - 05/06/21 03:26 PM (2 years, 9 months ago)

my tubs (actually cloning trays) have been sitting on these racks which are the perfect size to squeeze 3 trays on each row.

The only problem i have noticed is that the bottoms of the trays can get hot spots in the middle from the radiating heat of the LED bar  after some hours of the light cycle. With wire racks there is pretty much no protection and i wasn't anticipating the LEDs to get hot enough to radiate into the trays above. I've measured the temps and they are usually between 82-85F on the hot spots. The rest of the surface, about 80%, stays around 74-77F on average. Today one of the trays had a hot spot hit 88F- the highest ive read yet.  These hot spots are no wider than your hand, but run across the middles of the trays.

Does anyone know of a liner or something i could lay down on the shelves to effectively protect the bottom of the trays from heat? Only things i could come up with are those white/black plastic liners for building out grow tents or some reflective material. Maybe even just a flat piece of wood 1/2 or 1/4 inch thick?  Any intuitive or clever solutions? I appreciate your inputs.

Would something like this work if i were to just stick it against the rails under each row of trays?

much love, thank you

Insulation is usually air trapped between two or more surfaces.
So maybe cardboard.

A reflective and porous material would probably be your best bet. Over here they sell radiator foil, which is basically a layer of insulation coated in reflective foil that's meant to go behind radiators to prevent heat loss, that would work well.

yeah thats whats confusing me about the reflective insulations im looking through online. didnt think about cardboard, but wouldn't cardboard also be absorbing the heat as well? it would bring down the hot spot for sure but probably still get pretty warm? maybe cardboard with mirror-liner on one side loll

reflective liner was my initial idea- i wasn't sure if insulation would be okay though, probably gotta find one thats mainly reflecting but not absorbing heat right? Definitely will try. I have climate control running all day- so having the heat radiating downwards onto the tops of my trays as a result of reflective liner should be ok i hope

Insulation does not absorb heat, it prevents heat transfer through it by minimizing heat radiation, convection and conduction. Heat radiation is minimized by the reflective layer, conduction is minimized by the air that's sandwiched in the insulation, and convection is minimized because that air is trapped and can't flow.

That said, all the heat that has been going into the tub above it will end up going somewhere else, so I would advise you to check the temperature of the lamps and the surrounding structures after you install the insulation. If the temperature becomes too high you'll need to get rid of the heat with a heat sink, fans or both.

Indeed. I waz thnking the same thing when i waz posting.

I wud use pieces.of.cardboard or foam with a layer of mylar on each side.
Ive used mylar (emergency blanket) as a sleeping bag cuz i was freezing my nuts off out at my placer claim and it worked amazing.

Maybe buy a roll of reflectix. It's bubble wrap with mylar on both sides.its sold in most hardware stores. Barring that is just get a cheap yoga mat, foam floor mat, or foam insulation board and zip tie it to the underside of the shelf. You may get condensation issues though that drip on your trays

Maybe move the lights to run vertically down the sides of the shelf?

didnt think about the sides of the racks tbh, i was thinking maybe on the back but the sides would be better. I'll check out the room again tomorrow and see whats up :takingnotes: good idea

if im being honest, if i couldn't find a decent solution this was going to be my plan b.
besides looking clean, my main reason was so i could keep the racks/lights as a single unit- and be able to move them around anywhere with minimal tear-down if i needed to. if i mount on the walls then that becomes fixed and splits the components.

...but that doesnt mean shit to me if i don't have proper conditions for the project though. Now that i think of it again, i don't have any reasons to move the racks right now, so just might move the lights for the time being. Thanks for bringing me back to that my man.

thanks for the replies

will probably try a couple things and see what works best and update if anyone cares to know. moving the lights would be the easiest as of right now.
