Steam sterilizing wheat is going to be a bitch, but you could still try. Maybe try PF Tek and then shred your cakes into coir once they're colonized. You'll need a lot of cakes though for a 60qt tub. You could also try Broke Boi which I've had some success with. In general though going from syringe to grains is risky.

for the love of god, don’t do broke boi tek lol. i’m sure some one somewhere has pulled it off, but you’re gonna run into way more trouble than it’s worth for that reddit shit. just do PF tek if you don’t want to deal with a pressure cooker or agar. you’ll have way more success

Personally I had way more success with broke boi than with PF Tek. What's the difference between brown rice and wheat/rye berries/etc?

nothing functionally. it’s a grain like any other. you can totally use whole brown rice, it’s just a bit harder to get the moisture content right & from what i’ve read on it, the “sterilization” procedure of the broke boi tek is pretty shit. i’ve seen a lot of bacterial spawn from it when i looked on the reddit. if you were to pressure cook it/properly steam sterilize it you’re just prepping grains like any other thing you might use so it would be kinda silly to call it a tek imo. i dunno if shooting spores to whole brown rice is better than doing it to other grains, but i know spore to grain is generally pretty shitty & you’d need to have a guarantee of a clean syringe to not end up with a bacterial mess. weird you ran into more problems with PF tek, i’ve found it to be pretty bullet proof myself as long as your syringe isn’t filled with contaminates

Idk, i find Brown rice to be by far the easiest grain to deal with when it comes to hydration and prepping in general.
Step 1. Rinse rice, Step 2. Cook rice for 8-10 mins Step 3. Rinse the half cooked rice in cold water to stop it from cooking further Step 4. Let the rice sit in the collander for about 1 hr to dry out Step 5. Load jars STep 6. PC
The worst i've had of contams is a few jars that has been slightly bacterial (because of MSS). The spawn still produced good results and i ran the 12quart shoebox for about 2flushes before it Triched out mid 3rd flush
My other shoeboxes has done 3-4 flushes before they just kinda stop producing.
Some actually say that BR naturally contain fewer bacterial endospores then other grains and is therefore more "safe" to use with MS syringes. If they are relatively clean. The creator of the BB-tek states this (take that with a grain of salt) and i swear i've read it somewhere else too. If i find a link to that i will update this post.
The only argument i can see against BR is that it could end up sticking and clumping together making shaking a bitch because of the starch. Well, my sollution to this is to use long grained Basmati rice. It's not a sticky starchy type like Jasmine rice and i've never had any problems shaking up my jars.
Even g2g'ed a lot of jars with Master jars made from MS syringes without problems.
Nah idk, i guess it's up to personal preference but i really like brown rice as spawn.

yeah, but you’re pressure cooking it, not steam sterilizing it for 90 minutes lol. that’s the issue i have with the “tek” & even in the philly golden teacher vid of it i watched the dude had some clearly bacterial spawn in one of the examples lol (i def don’t advocate for PGT just watched the video to see what the “tek” actually was.) if you’re pressure cooking it you’re just prepping grains, not “broke boi tek.” don’t get me wrong, i still get bacterial spawn w oats, & nothing wrong w brown rice on its own. i know it supposedly more resistant to bacteria, at least in the PF tek form. not sure if that also applies to whole brown rice but based on the amount of bacterial uncle bens bags i’ve seen i think it will gladly go bacterial if your process is shitty lol. but just using whole brown rice on its own is totally fine if you’re sterilizing it properly & using actual sterile technique. i think whole brown rice just doesn’t get used a lot because it’s probably relatively expensive to buying bulk oats/WBS/other grains. i’ve just read the prep can be hard to get down since it can get starchy on you if you’re not careful. that’s good to know MS syringe to whole brown rice works well though, makes sense that it would if PF tek works so well too

I guess if the sterilization method is what makes it broke boi then I haven't done broke boi either. I just sterilized in my instapot. I can echo the good results from brown rice though, I've gotten good yields after dialing in the moisture.
