Accidentally let temperature reach 96F during fruiting for 8 hours * 1
    #27295329 - 05/05/21 09:53 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

First time grower here, I’m using the “original” grow kit from magicmushroomkit.ca (I’m aware of the consensus around here regarding grow kits, I will most likely try a tek next time). This kit uses straw substrate, 1L of Stropharia Cubensis Cuban mushroom spawn, casing soil, and a cardboard tray with a plastic dome lid.

The instructions recommend maintaining an ambient temperature between 79-82F during fruiting, and keeping the dome lid on all the time except while misting (once a day). I’m on my first flush and had been following the instructions to a tee, the first pins came through 5 days ago and last night I harvested about 10 mature shrooms, and there are around 30 pins remaining. My harvested shrooms look pretty good/healthy but I noticed the bottoms had a little bit of white fuzz.

After doing some reading on these forums I decided I would crack the dome lid slightly to increase FAE and lower the ambient temperature to 75F overnight. I’m using a space heater with automatic temperature control in a closet and instead of setting it to “auto” mode for 75F I accidentally left it on a constant low heat setting. When I checked in the morning the temperature of the closet was 96F and it was probably at that temperature for around 8 hours (with the lid cracked). The pins grew a bit larger overnight and they still look okay to me, but I’m far from an expert.

Has anyone here done anything like this before, and did it have a noticeable effect on your yield or future flushes? Is there anything I should be doing now to mitigate potential damage? I gave the chamber a generous misting this morning, lowered the temperature back to 75F, and put the lid back on securely.

Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!

These are the mushrooms I harvested last night:

heating pad is typically unnecessary unless you're somewhere super cold, mycelium generates it's own heat and will usually be a few degrees warmer than the ambient temperature.

casing is also unnecessary for most cubensis varieties

I've let my cult room get to the high 80s on accident before but it wasn't an issue. 96 is definitely not great but I don't think it'd be super harmful unless it was over a longer period. Cubensis will do fine anywhere from like 60-85 but most people keep them in the mid 70s. Keeping it colder slows them down a bit but keeping them warmer can create a better environment for contams so it's about finding the sweet spot. I keep my cult room at 74 during the day and it gets to like 70ish at night.

props for getting fruit on your first go, definitely look into some teks for future attempts.

It's probably fine. Even if it's not fine, it'll eventually be fine. So it's fine.

congrats on ur first fruits mate.
I actually did a really similar thing. Space heater got left on low and temps got up to nearly 100F for 4 hours or so. The tub did trich out the next day but it had already been contamed by then so I doubt the heat had anything to do with it. Mayb could of upped your chances for contam thou so keep an eye.
Trust me, get off the kits mate. Its easy smack for when ur getting started and everything seems overwhelming but I just went throu this myself. Youll go throu months of half ass results until u get sick of it and finally follow a tek. Be better than I and skip that step mate, its a lot simpler than it seems at first. Id highly suggest starting here https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/24420178#24420178

Nice fruits and photos! Looks great!

As mentioned abobe, u dont need heating pads in this hobby. The exception is if u are growing in the winter and have poor insulation/heating in your living space. Other than that specific situation, no heating pads are needed.

Cubes have great heat tolerance so Im sure they werent damaged in anyway

Thanks for the detailed temperature advice, I appreciate it. Just to clarify I’m not using a heating pad, it’s just an electric space heater with built in fan and thermostat that sits on the ground and heats the entire room/closet. I will look into some teks in the future for sure!

Thanks! Glad I’m not the only one who’s done something like this 😂. I’ll check out the link you sent me about getting started with teks. Cheers.

Happy to hear you think my shrooms will be okay. I’ll post an update later on in this thread and share how everything went.

Glad to hear it, I’ve been enjoying the process so far so I’m definitely excited to try a real tek after I’m done seeing what this kit can provide.
