Mulch is common in cities, the natural mulch produced by flooding of streams and rivers is their favorite food tho. Easiest thing to do is to pick a creek or river, put on some boots and start walking until you step on them.

For finding woodchip piles I would suggest more public options, parks, gardens, especially if you know the woodchips/mulch piles have relatively frequent access to water (for example, people water gardens pretty often) and preferably somewhat shaded. You'd think it'd be suspicious perusing various public piles, but 90% of people couldn't actually careless (and are completely clueless as to what you're doing) and if you do happen to wander upon one of the 10%, at most, they'll probably just give you a weird look.

By public I just mean anywhere that isn't in the middle of the forest, I don't mean areas that people will frequently walk on (like playground woodchips), the area you're hunting should still be secluded to an extent.

I've been having the same luck as Koods. Worst year so far. Hoping that todays rain might kick things off. The ground has been powdery dry recently and I'm sure that is playing at least a partial role.
I've also noticed that the mulch beds that fruited prolifically the last couple years haven't done squat.

Same out west here in the PNW.  Blessed are the sprinkler fed chip beds, for they are an oasis of hope.

Western MD (especially, IIRC, Garrett Co) is very sparsely populated so lots of things will be different. In more densely populated areas of MD, stuff within 50 miles or so of I-95, lots of land is shaped by human action. There are a lot of paths, playgrounds, etc. that get mulched. While I would be very cautious about being an adult without a child on a playground, looking to where the playground drains and following that area downstream might offer better than average possibilities.

Look at google maps and try to find bends in creeks, too. I was looking at Western MD and it's full of creeks that should provide some good habitat. Hopefully it isn't all private land. And hopefully some of it doesn't come with a steep bank. People talk about floodplains for a reason.

Use satellite images and terrain map on Google earth to find good plains, windy streams and rivers are usually the prime suspects

Went out into the pouring rain today and was rewarded. Found a new patch with quite a few fruits and only two or three of them were rotting, the rest were perfect

Update: went out today to 3 different locations I scouted on google maps, creeks and by a larger river. Did not see a single mushroom of any species other than some old bracket fungi. It seems hard to find flood plains because when I get to the location they all just seem like dense jungle. I'll post some pics of the habitats I ended up at. It's a place where ovoids were observed last year according to iNaturalist. It was a very unenjoyable hike, full of weeds and snakes, and I'm not inclined to do it again.

The funny thing is, the only mushrooms I saw all day are when I got back home and there were some LBMs pinning in the mulch right where I parked at my apartment complex. Kind of like a cosmic joke. Definitely not ovoids though, as they have no veil and are kind of bell or conical shaped.

Checked spots two weeks ago and everything was miserably behind and dry. Ohio has been dry af until about a week ago when we had a spike in temps (80ish for 2 days) then rain daily off and on but since then in the 50's into this weekend.

Should I try again this weekend or is it too cold? I'm probably going to. Thing is my spots are two hours away and I have the northernmost find in Ohio, different ballgame than the Ohio River areas.

You forgot to recommend going topless and being sure your cutoff shorts only just cover your booty and that they emphasize your package.

Did you folks get rain today??? Closer to I-95, we had our biggest storm in ages...

BTW, I'd be curious what those LBMs looked like. Ovoids massively vary in appearance and there's some phenotypes that might be described as conical.

Southern NY has been getting a ton of rain, went to check one of my biggest mulch patches and the season is definitely in full swing. Wish the rain would spread to you guys in a drought.
