I have like 150 jars too but didn't stop me from putting many of them in boxes in the closet.

roll up some cardboard into a tight cylinder about 4" thick at least and beat the jars upside down against it on a solid table.

Go to the gym and do wrist exercises.

Or switch to bags.

I saw a guy that modded one of those reciprocating tools and attached a snowboard binding on it. Load up a jar and would shake the sh*t out of it in no time. Easy load and unload

The guy who taught me bought a retired paint mixer from Sherwin Williams. Not the kind they use now with the lexan box but old school table kind.

If it was me I would weld a t to an old reciprocating saw blade and use hose clamps to hold the jar. You couldtighten and listen the clamps fast with a drill and 1/4in nut driver

You're fine, keep shaking.
I ended up quadrupling this.

I have matter jars only.  I think it's about 36 or 48 and that's excessive.  Bags are way worth it,  theres a reason everyone uses them.  They make life much easier.

Unfortunately, my wrist/arm says otherwise :frown: I'm only at double what you have in the picture, but each of my runs I shake about 120 jars after innoculating, and then for the next 2-3 days my wrist is fucked, I can barely pick stuff up. It's kinda like carpel tunnel from what I've read, just doing a repetitive motion 120+ times.

Yea I think I gotta make the change. I've avoided bags because it's waste in a hobby that can be 99% waste free. Jars can be reused, towels can be reused, foil lids reused, tubs reused, really the only thing that doesn't get reused is spawn/substrate, but that gets put into the compost and spread in the garden at the end of the year/beginning of spring. Imma try the bags though.

If you make the change and keep moving forward maybe we can afford biodegradable bags..maybe as the industry moves forward they will be cheaper also.

Just remember, 20+ qts per run in a presto vs 10. That means twice as much grain for a similar amount of gas or electricity to run a PC. It's a trade off in efficiency, you aren't simply adding another waste as you are taking one away as well.

Unicorn has biodegradable bags or throw them into the recycle bin.

I think changing to bags is a good idea.

But, if you are a DIY type, maybe you can make a device to do the post-inoculation shake for you.

You said that its mainly after inoculating with LC that you need to shake, so the grains should still be fairly loose at that stage.

Instead of shaking, I think that rolling the jar around may be enough to redistribute your LC throughout the jar.

I was imagining a large wheel, with jar holders placed all around it.

Picture a beefed-up super-sized automatic watch winder.

A diy watch winder to demonstrate the principle:

Something like a Ferris wheel, but with jars strapped to the wheel instead of in carriages.

The jar holders would need to keep the jars locked in securely, to prevent them from rolling on their own.  As the large wheel rotates, the loose grains inside each jar will tumble, and hopefully spread your LC/spawn around. Ideally it would be motorized.

This obviously won't work for colonized jars, so going to bags is still a good idea if you really do have carpal tunnel symptoms.

I upgraded from a presto recently  Got them yung AA's now :P But yea, bags will definitely pack in more grain.

Yea, I'd experiment with putting them in the compost pit, make sure they compost completely before going full on with them. I don't put anything cultivation related into the bin.

My problem was the grain in my jars was no longer loose when the grain turned  all white.    It wouldn't budge.  I had to spray a long-handled metal spoon with ISO and then get it into the quart jar and dig before shaking did anything at all.

Sounds a bit overgrown. It can definitely be a pain if it goes over 100 percent for a week or so. I've noticed slower colonization times and lower yields with older spawn

I run into this problem with my Rusty White, once it hits 100% it only comes out in chunks (with a spoon) and I have to break it up by hand after that. Compared to my B+ isolate, that stuff you can beat the jars, pour em out, and count each kernel! Much easier to use, but lower yields :frown:
