Shoebox FAE
    #26266258 - 10/20/19 09:31 PM (5 years, 2 months ago)

I have 4 shoe boxes colonizing at the moment all are looking good. so far I have just left the lids on them and put them under 12/12 lighting after spawning to bulk. Im sure im gonna have to do something for FAE once they start pinning. This is my first time using shoe boxes i have done mono tubs in the past and always used holes with poly fill in them. When should i start increasing the FAE ? and whats the best way to give these shoe boxes sufficient FAE. It seems some people just leave them with the lids on until the first flush is done. How often would you have to fan if you just leave the lids on ? I work away from home so im gone for 24hrs at a time so im looking for the best way to get FAE with not having to fan multiple times daily my wife could fan them for me if absolutely necessary

Just leave the lid on till the pins are pushing it off and then dub it. You really don't need much more fae than you get from the loose fitting lids or another tub on top, usually you don't have to do to much to sb and they still do well.

okay cool thats kinda what i gathered from reading peoples shoebox logs its just seems weird not to do anything for FAE after years of doing monos with polly fill i think if these work out ill never go back to monos so far its been so much simpler and i love how if it contams its just one not the whole mono tub with all my spawn in

Yea thats why i like the sb's they are really convenient, you don't have to mess with them and they are small lol, easy to stack 5 or 6 or 10 in a closet with no body the wiser.

I thought it was crazy so I tried to put holes in a shoebox (see below)

Shoebox "no holes"  (I taped/sealed them closed with duct tape)

On the box with holes and micropore tape, I literally had to do maintenance daily. It was constantly drying out. There just isn't enough volume in the shoebox for it to need a monotub amount of FAE. I don't even unclip the lid anymore.

With it closed and no holes I don't even have to touch it usually until pins form

Same here i clip the lids and dub them when pins start pushing the lids off, cant really get much easier than that.

Shoeboxes are great. I see you're in Canada. Dollar Tree in my city sells these 5.2 quart shoeboxes, they aren't quite as big as the sterilites most people use, but for $1 they do the job! They have a white lid. It still works great. The sterilites here run $3-$4

Theres also the canadian tire type A shoeboxes which is the type you see in my previous pics.

edit:

These are the dollar tree ones from a better angle in case you go looking.

Holy fuck when did walmart lower their prices. You live in ontario?

(asking cause maybe it's a provincial price difference or something?)

I think last time I checked they were $3.50 or $4 each and they didn't even have 5 packs. I gotta check it out

Yep the lids fit perfectly and give it just enough fae. Dubtub if necessary. Shoeboxes are the real MVP

I've just shredded my cakes and mixed with verm/coco coir, then transferred to some shoeboxes, but I don't understand where any air is supposed to get in. The lids seem fairly tight-fitting to me. Anyone got any advice on this? I'm using these:

those are the ones pretty much everyone uses, the lid may seem tight but it’s an imperfect seal. you don’t need much FAE during colonization anyways. if you notice fuzzy feet during fruiting you can just unlatch the lid
