Tightly Packed Bulk-Sub
    #27293645 - 05/04/21 09:49 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hello to the mycology wizards whose advice I am here to seek-

On May 1st I spawned 4 quarts of oats to an unmodified mono (eyeballed the ratio but it's ~1:2 with CVG). After not seeing any surface growth after 3 days I began to rack my brain as to why, and I've concluded that it's due to either impatience or tightly packed substrate. I'm fairly OCD when it comes to my grows, and being new to monotubs I wanted to make sure my substrate was flat and pretty on the surface.

Well, to do this I packed down the substrate more than I think I should've in hindsight. Not with full force or anything but I definitely packed it down, which 2 minutes of research would've told me not to do. Digressing, my tub is currently in colonization mode with the lid on but not latched and I'm wondering if flipping it and putting it into fruiting conditions would allow some additional aeration that I initially limited by packing the sub. I imagine it would be detrimental at this stage to fluff up the substrate after opening the lid but I'm also unsure about that as well.

Also worth noting is that I have a shoebox going that I spawned a few days earlier with similar methods that seems to be doing just fine, so maybe I'm needlessly worrying.  :facepalm3:

Anyways happy to be back and I'll be posting pics of my successes and failures over the course of this grow!

As long as your spawn is clean and you properly pasteurized your sub you'll be fine. Don't sweat it.

You can put it into fruiting if you want but it's not necessary. Some people don't because it dries out the sub too fast so that's your call

It can take around 10 days after spawning before you see any growth on the top layer depending on how thick you made the top layer. Like mentioned above, don't worry about it and remain patient. You can absolutely flip the lid this early but you want to make sure the sub doesn't dry out from the increased FAE

Thanks for setting my mind at ease

Gonna let it fully colonize this time but definitely wanna experiment with straight to fruiting in the future
