question...
    #27292112 - 05/03/21 01:53 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Its been some time since my last grow. I wanna spawn to coco coir, but I've forget how to pasteurize the coco coir!! I used the PF tek BRF cakes then I used the lazy bag Tek for G2G and now my bags are colonized and ready for my shoe boxes. I remember using some tek with a 5gallon bucket and boiling hot water and leaving it caped for 12 hour how ever I cant remember if verm is added in the bucket with the coir?  Can anyone please point me in the right direction. I'm doing pretty good so far just going off memory and  just doing some light research

Just throw your coir/verm into a bucket, no need to use boiling water, hot tap water will do.

Just throw the lid on, let it expand and cool.

what is the ratio for Verm, Coir, and Water? and also I thought it was imperative that you put the boiling water in to clean/Pasteurize the substrate to eliminate any potential bacteria?

That was what people once believed, but we know now that pasteurization isn't necessary with coir and vermiculite. The hot water just allows it to expand quickly and some would argue there is some benefit to "cooking" the coir a bit. I personally don't know if that's the case, I just like using hot water as apposed to cold.

For your average store bricks of coir:

1 650 gram brick of coir
3 litres verm
4 litres water

I use:

1100 grams premium coir
3 full quarts verm
5 liters hot water.

Depends on the coir and verm that you have, this is just ball park. You may have to tweak it a little but it should be close.

Coir can be coarse or smooth which will affect the water retention, same with your verm. Fine verm holds more water due to increased surface area, so just check it as you go.

im assuming i should heat up more water just in case i need more then. also is it cool to  mix up and check the consistency at anytime ?  like when do i check for field capacity ?

You won't need more water, if anything you may need to add more verm if the coir is too wet.

Mix and let cool, then check.

1 brick in to a 5 gallon bucket, 2 quarts of verm, 4 quarts of boiling water, and throw the lid on for a couple hours. Mix it up and let it cool in the tub the till it's 90 degrees and add your spawn.
