Math question HELP!
    #27291868 - 05/03/21 10:59 AM (2 years, 11 months ago)

75 passengers on a train, 2 of which have been tested positive for covid19 and 20 of which who have been vaccinated, leave Union station in Chicago at 7 am and arrive in Salt Lake City. The locomotive is traveling at 100 mph.

How can you calculate the lives saved by the vaccination?

First to solve gets a 5 shroom rating and an atta' boy.

Ephesians 6:12
For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
Psalm 12:6
The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
Hebrews 11:3
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
Revelation 3:11
Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

As many as it takes.

You're on the right track.

This is an ill posed problem. And whoever came up with this has no damn clue about the difference between a deterministic and a probabilistic model.

Anyway, the people who are saved may not even be riding in that train. Get your vaccines so that grandma and grandpa can be free to visit their friends again.

So is there no way to calculate the lives saved? There must be data out there that you can plug in to find out. Or are there just too many variables??

That's the difference between a probabilistic and a deterministic model. For such small number of people this can be considered a sample that is not statistically representative.

20 people were saved from covid, but the person at the control center had a heart attack and a passerby switched the track to stop the train from hitting 7 people to a track that only had one person, so 18

As an analogy, one can predict with confidence the average temperature, precipitation, highs and lows during the month of January in Chicago. But predicting what the weather is going to be like on January 23, 2022 between 3 and 5 pm is not possible. What you are asking is similar to ask someone to predict what the weather is going to be like on January 23, 2022 between 3 and 5 pm in Chicago.

So is it entirerly impossible to figure out how many lives are saved?? Do you need a bigger sample and more time??? Truly interested in figuring this out.

20 + something like 0, 3 . The vaccinated people decrease the density of unvaccinated on the train. I am too lazy for the full computation, but  75 - 2 -20 = 53  unvaccinated but healty people on the train . The change to get covid are in the worst case 80% assuming no mask and so on , but again who is vaccinated decrase the density of sensitive people, therefore even who is unvaccinated has a better change in the train. Even the lenght (I means the n. of hours) of the travel is a factor in the equation (more time = biggerst change to get covid)

It's 1759 miles from Chicago to Salt Lake City. At 100 miles an hour, it would take them...
