Can I just soak my whole oats in water for 24hrs rather than boil them for 30mins?

Currently I've been doing Bods Oat Tek successfully multiple times. But a friend of mine said you don't even need to boil them. He says you can just soak them in water for 24hrs and then strain them to dry. Is this true? If yes, that would be a little easier in regards to my workflow. What are the pros/cons to this?

Do not soak oats or any other large grains. If you want to soak then run seed. Click the more inoculation points link in my signature.

Yes you very well can, in fact a large scale mushroom farm called mossy creek mushrooms uses this method for all there grain prep. I've used it before myself though it works better with birdseed. They will be slightly wet when loading jars but will absorb within 8 hours if cooling.

Try it and post results.
Half the reason I use WBS is so I don't have to simmer.

I didn't say that it couldn't be done. I am saying that its very poor practice, have you ever soaked oats in a bucket? I have and it fucking sucks.
I'd like to see this farms output and spawn health because anyone can get things done half-assed.
The absolute fact of the matter is you can't soak hard cereal grains and have them absorb water, it just does not happen. I challenge you to go soak some oats, wheat, or rye without boiling or simmering and then cut the kernel in half to observe the water content.
Improper hydration equals improper/incomplete sterilization. You can grow mushrooms with bacterial spawn, but its not recommended.

I don't recommend it. The longer they soak, the more chances you give bacterial endospores to germinate and then multiply. This ups the chance of bacterial contamination, even after pressure cooking.
Second, the oats come out a bit more dirty, though that's not a huge issue but I don't like it.
My formula for flawless oats every time and no contams is: Boil water first, then when rapidly boiling, dump oats in and cook 35 minutes. Strain, spread out on a bedsheet and put a big box-fan aimed on them for 4 hours. Done.
The one thing I didn't like about the oat teks is the half of monitoring for "a few split grains". I found that difficult. So now at the 30 min mark, I pull a single good looking oat with husk intact out of the water, pull the husk off, then split it open and look for white. I consider the oats perfect when there is just a tiny hint of white inside on the very end of the grain. For the oats I have and the altitude I live in, this is always 35 minutes.

That's cool you even can his channel is mossy creekmushrooms on youeven can his channel on YouTube is mossycreekmushrooms, Facebook group is mossback mushroom syndicate. He runs an actual mushroom farm.
As far as the process it's not bad. Soak I. A bucket double lined with a paint strainer bag filled with grain and water. Lift the bag to strain and jar up still slightly wet. It will absorb an excess water 8 to 12 hours after cooling.
You can do a boiling prep by lining a small cooler with a paint strainer putting your grains in that, then pouring boiling water overtop. Let it sit for 30 mins then lift to drain and let dry.
Both work well

So after checking out this guys grain prep I'm reasonably certain that the only reason he's getting away with this method is because he's growing Pleurotus, which is super aggressive.
He's running 5lb bags of fermented spawn with supplementation, I might add, for 2.5 hours!!
Not only that, he's using a very dark brown LC, which indicates that he's running it rich. This is all fine and dandy I suppose for an aggressive commercial Pleurotus culture but that's about it.
This would be a disaster for cubes. Species must be considered when considering cultivation methods.

I'm pretty sure he is either running his lc rich to sell culture syringes that have a good looking amount of my in them or he is using dark malt extract. Homebrew stores put it on sale when it doesn't sell and sits for too long. Atleast my homebrew stores seems to have it on sale often.
I cultivate both as well as lion's mane, maitake and kings I use this same grain prep for all. I prefer wbs but use oats often as I have a feed store within walking distance. It works for me. It takes a couple runs to figure out how dry is dry enough and not come out with wet grains but eats talks about this in his oat Tek and I followed his guidance. It works the same as the teks where one weighs out grain and water and PCs and hydrated all in one go. I put zero stock in the fermenting grains theory. I do it solely for time.
I have absolutely no problems with this method but ymmv. Fwiw I've used agar wedges, lc, and li with this prep

Glad that it works for you. Would you post some pics of your cube grain spawn?

I’ve started soaking my grains for days, oats and wheat, bring it to a boil and let it sit until hydrated. This has been working better for me. I’ve soaked them for five days, The fermentation stops after about 48 hours. From what I’ve heard endo spores won’t form without oxygen, but I’m no scientist, just read it from unicorn. But they definitely still need some heat to get the kernels fully hydrated. I’d have a hard time going back to just boiling dry grains after doing it this way. Come to think of it I did do a batch without boiling, can’t remember if it was a 24 or 48 hour soak, but they sucked, they fully colonized but it took a long time, way too long. It worked, but my shelf space is valuable real estate.

Don't have any going currently just oysters innocd yesterday so wont do much good. Looks wet from lc. Will add some when I do my next cube run. I may run some this week if I remember I'll post it up.
I got a jar of toc spawn I accidentally packed away since December and nss plate too if you wanna see those.

That's what I thought.
I've made a pretty good case for why soaking cereal grains is a less than optimal method. The farm you linked to support your claim uses methods that would likely fail altogether for cubes, or at best would produce very poor spawn.
I suggest that the OP try this method for himself and determine if it's suitable. I already know that it's not, and it's not really my place to convince anyone. I do however like to give the best information available based upon my own direct experience.
Getting a result is not synonymous with getting great results.
Good luck everyone.
