Magash,

I too will try the simmer after reading your reply. I have noticed the dry grain at the top of jars, but I just shook it out like the verm on top of the little cakes I used to do. Hopefully your tip will turn that little bit of dry grain into usable substrate. 5 shrooms for you!! (again)

I have q about simmering WBS .If you simmer it, red and white millet have different bursting times so you get bursted red millets and other kernels with less water.Have you got any ideas about this?

Why are there 2 holes in your canning lids? a big one and a smaller one. Im just curious because after reading this tek, i cant wait to get this started but i've never worked with grain before, only pf tek. Also are you saying you only put one cup of grain into your quart jars? Peace, and awesome tek.

Hey, I'm just wondering what Magash's choice of casing might be. Also, when he removes the water after simmering, he says it is yellow, might that be removing nutrients from the rye? One more thing, if that is the case, might it be a good idea to instead simmer the rye with the original (now piss) water to regain any lost nutrients?

Right , some guies use it like a liquid culture medium .

Dont know , but that is likely to be too sticky .

The reason the water turns yellow and isn't yellow from the start is cause of bacteria not nutes. I would not reuse this water. The whole reason for soaking is to get rid of the stuff that is in that water not to add water to the grain. That is done during the simmer.

Yea, seriously Magash is quite the "myco tyco"... sorry that was lame, but anyways, one more question about his TEK. Supposidly it is as easy as the PF TEK, but would you recommend it for begginers as a replacement?

I like your tek magash!  Your post about endospores was very intersting.

I have soaked grain for 12 hours then simmered for one hour(till grains looked ready, very few busted kernels)

I have done no presoaking and just added one cup of grain and 3/4 cups of water to every quart jar and PC'ed

I have done just simmering.

for me, they all work the same... I only use the last one now b/c it saves time. I can load more grain into the quart jars with the first method and the third method. I use about 600 ml of simmered grain for every quart jar... I have control jars for each method and they have all showed the same results for me(zero contams)... my kernels look very good with any pre Pcing  method I use.

I personally think magash's tek is the best for a newbie b/c its limits ways you can get contams... its being extra safe and making sure you will get a sterile jar.

Yes. You get to see all phases of growth so I do think it's as good as the PF tek for a begginer.

My first attempt with the pftek, did not work. The jars came out alright, but now that i cased them, they smell sorta bad, and after 9 days, the mycelium hasnt come thru the casing layer at all, so i think they are contaminated.

I am defenatley going to try this tek. I know for tyvek you can use those free envelopes from the Post Office, but which part of them do you use. I dont want to have to order those magick filter things, haha.

Also, where do u think one could find rye for this tek locally... a health food store or?

Ya, where would rye or wbs be found locally, i always just use popcorn but i'm thinking rye or wbs will be more money efficient. What is the rye exactly called, i have looked for it before asking stores if they had any organic rye grain and they didn't know wtf i was talking about! Also what should i ask when looking for wbs and where?

Thanks to Magash for this info.

I tend to edit this stuff to make it easier for me to refer to while I'm working, so I thought I'd post my restatment of Magash's instructions, sans pictures, just in case others like to have the info in a pure step-by-step guide.

The below is Magash's tek, I've just editied it into a more concise format.

Quote:

Magash's Simple Rye/WBS Tek

1. Obtain rye grain ('Rye Berries') or wild bird seed (WBS).

2. Put one cup of rye in a strainer and shake off the dust.

3. Dump the rye into a quart jar, fill with water and let soak for 24 hours. (This germinates bacterial endospores for destruction in step 7)

4. Discard the soak water and dump the rye into a large pot. Add enough clean water to cover the rye and simmer for 45 minutes. Some of the rye will start to burst and it will turn brown and swell. (Alternate method, skips step 2&3, simmer for 1 hour)

5. Discard the water, rinse the rye with fresh water and drain.

6. Fill quart jars 2/3's to 3/4's with rye. Put lids on the jars with a Tyvek(*NB) disk between the lid and band.

7. Pressure cook the jars at 15psi for 1 hour. To avoid clumping when the rye is cool, shake the jars while they are still hot as hell.

8. When cool, innoculate through the Tyvek with 2-3ml of spore solution and seal the syringe hole.

9. Shake the jars well to distribute the spores. In 9 to 20 days the jars should be fully colonized.

10. Case the rye and allow to incubate for 3-4 days.

Total time from innoculation to harvest is 4-5 weeks.

*NB : Tyvek can be obtained from USPS Priority Mail envelopes that are labeled 'DuPont Tyvek', use the whole envelope.
