odd looking growths, like tiny barrel cacti, on substrate after first flush
    #27289154 - 05/01/21 12:31 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hey all, long time lurker on the site, have never posted before today, but I'm completely stumped and can't find anything online or on this site regarding a strange new ... thing? plant? fungus? ... I'm seeing on my substrate.

I just harvested a first flush of my most successful grow ever: I'd used Lizard King mycelium from an agar plate provided by a friend. No contaminations from beginning to end, large (for me, anyway) first flush. The only minor disappointment was that the veils opened much more quickly than I'd anticipated -- went to bed when they looked a good day away from maturing, woke up to mushrooms wide open and a few dropping spores. I quickly harvested everything, gave the substrate (verm & coir) a 24-hour soak, and hoped that I'd get a second flush despite a few spores having dropped (I've read that this can kick the mycelium out of fruiting mode and into colonizing mode).

Today I checked the tub, and was puzzled to see what I first thought must be pieces of harvested mushrooms. The things I was seeing looked as if I'd torn apart a mushroom cap and set the pieces, gill-side-up, on the substrate. But, as I looked, I noticed these things everywhere, and they were/are clearly growing. They start off as small gray-green gill-like growths of no particular shape, but seem to be forming into round growths that look for all the world like tiny, spineless barrel cacti, or maybe brain coral. They are growing quickly, given that I saw none yesterday. The largest is probably about as big around as a penny. I've taken a couple of photos and can hopefully attach them without any problem.

These kind of creep me out, to be honest. I'm used to seeing contaminants in my mushroom tubs, and have come to recognize molds and trich, but I don't know what to make of this. I don't even know what to search for online. Tried doing a reverse image search on Google, but only got a lot of coral photos. Anyone got a clue as to what I'm dealing with here? Is this a burn-down-the-house kind of situation as far as future cultivation goes? Or is this just some weird mutation of Lizard King?

Looks like some type of mutation. Pretty sure there still p cubensis. Never seen it before though. Clone it.

Thanks for the response -- I've decided these must be somehow related to bits of mushroom that broke off while I was harvesting. They were tightly packed, the caps were fragile, and I must have scattered more bits and bobs than I thought. Perhaps the overnight soak somehow kicked the bits into a reproduction mode and they're going to eventually grow into recognizable mushrooms.

Some of the smaller growths have detached from the mycelium since my first post. They're darker than they were, and were easily removed with sterilized tweezers. Looking a them up close, I can't really decide if they were originally mushroom caps or not. I think it's likely

The larger ones, when prodded carefully, feel solid and firm and bear little resemblance to any mushroom I've tried to grow. If I were attempting to grow a toothed or grooved mushroom, I would not be surprised to see a pin that looked like these things.

Regardless, it's worth paying attention, and I suppose this is one reason this frustrating hobby keeps me coming back for more! Thanks again, I appreciate you taking the time to reply. I don't expect a 2nd flush from this tub at this point, but I'll keep it around and see how things turn out.
