Pressure cooker, 15 psi 1 hour, issues.. 3rd try, suggestions?

Hey guys. I recently purchased a presto 23 quart PC. I am re packing my brf jars today. I started off w 15 psi 90 minutes: sour smell, burnt substrate. 2nd attempt was 15 psi for 60 min. Still somewhat rubbery w less of a smell, enough for me to try something different. Is my foil to tight? Should i bring psi down? Is it the brand of verm or flour? Should I bring to boil from lower temp? The jars are not touching the water. I bring 3qts to boil on oven setting 8, let steam release for 10 minutes, put weight on, and reduce heat till 15 psi is met and start timing. I leave them in overnight. Hesitant to do it all over again before looking at some suggestions. Thank you!

Am i Am I possibly packing too tight? My non ringed lids have 4 holes (obv) screwed on tight and have foil wrapped a 1/3 to halfway down the jar.

No clue what you have going on but if you did everything the way you described you should be fine.

Considering just boiling w/o pressure but that seems to defeat the point of the investment.

Presto PC work just fine for everyone here. Something has to be going wrong that you aren't recognizing. Do you have pics?
What kind of BRF and verm are you using?

It's not the aluminum foil.
There's always some smell when PCing brf. Is your substrate black or how do you know that it's burned? Did you use the 2:1:1 ratio when mixing your brf?
ALso, as far as packing goes, you really don't want to pack it at all, except a little at the top to make it flat. Just scoop it in until it gets to the level of the rim, and then press it down with your thumb to make it flat and allow you to put your dry verm on the top. It should be kind of loose, and it will allow for faster colonization and cakes that don't stall.

Its not black, but a dark brown. 60 minutes yielded brown spots that look rubbery. I think i packed too tight or im being too critical..sorry for not consolidating my response

So you don't have the rubber band lids but you've made injection holes into the screw on lid is that correct? I honestly think the foil is messing with your jars drawing in the steam and condensing it to water on top of the lids where the holes are. Unless only your bottom jars are soaked then you need to consider rubber band lids with the ring or with normal screw on lid as long as it's a double lid it will work fine every time. How big are the holes btw?

The holes are one centimeter. I did notice condensation on the lids under foil after inspection. These are jars im re using from a midwest grow kit that came pre sterilized my first successful run. No rubber. Bottom jars are not soaked First time pc ing myself. Any suggestion besides new lids? Rubberbands?

Actually they do have rubber, didnt notice because its white. So what should i do further to prevent moisture from being sucked up there? The dry verm layer was still dry...

No tape. Should i use the micropore and rubber bands? When they came presterilized there was no tape and i figure that will complicate glovebox operation. But willing to give it a shot. Should i go microporetape and tight fitting bands? Necessary?

Wouldn't a cm hole be too big? For pftek I just made the holes just big enough for the needle to get through.

At this point why not start with agar and ho straight to bulk via grain spawn? You have the equipment required. Well worth the time and effort.

Update: i think it was the old foil! Did a test, 3 jars. One as i did w new foil, one w rubberband around new foil at bottom of lid, and one w micropore tape and a rubberband on new foil. 15psi, 1 hr.. all came out flawless. From here, im thinking of sticking w the bands just as precaution. Think I should go bavk to 90 minutes? Thank you guys!

I do plan on learning about agar, grain, and bulk sub during this round. Spore prints/propagation is on my learning list too. I like to research alot first, i figured this round of cakes would afford me the time to read read read. If ya got a direction to point in for learning that, lmk! Thanks again

There is always some condensation that gets sucked into the jars if you are opening the PC before letting it properly cool. Maybe instead of killing the heat, turn in down slowly when the cycle is done and let it cool off slower.

The foil should be loose on the jars. Never rubber band it down
