First Time Using A PC By Myself
    #27288393 - 04/30/21 09:35 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

I have a quick question about PCs. For the last few tubs I have been getting sterilized substrate jars from my friend. I just got my own PC though and Im going to start making my own grain jars tomorrow. My question is how actually dangerous is this process and does anyone have any tips for what to absolutely not to do to avoid blowing myself up?

Has anyone here ever had a bad accident or gotten close to it while working with a PC?

They are very safe. Just don't try to speed up the cooling down process by taking the weight off the PC before the safety button drops

If they weren't safe enough there would probably be less veteran growers on this site.

If you do your due diligence you won't have any issues.

modern pressure cookers aren't really dangerous.  They have a pressure relief valve that will blow before the metal gives out and usually have a lock that engages when the pressure is high to prevent you from opening it when under pressure.  You will be fine.

one tip is: don't fill it too full with water or it won't build pressure correctly.  There is usually a line etched into the inside of the pot to show where you should fill it to (or no higher than).  The first time I used one, I over filled it and it was boiling but wouldn't build pressure.

Also it usually works best to leave the pressure weight off the nipple until you see a steady roll of steam coming out.  This will help the pot engage the lock and pop up the pressure button thing since it will jump up in pressure faster than if you have the weight on the nipple before the water is hot.

Hope this helps.

A pressure cooker, made out of metal, gets to 15psi. PVC pipes, made out of plastic, are rated at 200psi+. As long as you don't open the lid with pressure still in it you're good.

Never heard of anyone blowing one up. And have only seen 3 pictures of them blown up ever.

I just had to Google "pressure cooker explosion" one more time even tho I've searched it a few years ago but I was actually amazed at how many results came up and how Impressive some results were. Yes it's a freak accident shall it occur but it doesn't hurt to regularly check how much water your PC is using for the long cycles and to check for parts of the vessel bulging out or parts becoming loose or what not.

Just the other day I noticed the bottom on one of my Presto's had come out so much at this point that it can not any more get up to pressure unless I hack it by wedging stuff inbetween the top of the lid and the kitchen fan unit, just to clamp down a bit extra on some spots that are starting to leak badly. And interestingly enough this bulge came within a month or two after I started PCing on 20PSI, could also be all the wear and tear over the years of course but when you see a fully loaded huge metal object start wobbling on the stove from the expressed bottom centre then you begin to wonder things like: "is this like a perennial/liminal explosion about to happen/not happen or was happening at some point but didn't have time to finish. Will it at some point"? :bongload:
