Can rhizomorphic growth transfer to LC?
    #27287902 - 04/30/21 01:50 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hey guys,
I know that if you've got some rhizomorphic agar cultures and you noc up some grain with it then the rhizomorphic growth will transfer to the grain. So can one use the same agar to noc up some LC and if that LC is used on the grain can one expect rhizomorphic growth to transfer still? Or is the only way to transfer rhizomorphic growth with agar? I'm aware that the LC itself will not look rhizomorphic.

No, mycelium grows rhizo because of conditons. Transfer to a high nutrients agar plate it wont look rhizo. Transfer to a low nutrition plate and it will look rhizo. Rhizo mycelium means nothing. Stop worrying about it. Mycelium doesn't grow rhizomorpic in LC.

i think bodh might have misread your post, but most cube mycelium usually looks mostly rhizomorphic on grain. If your grain growth looks really puffy that's not usually a good sign. Please note that I am talking about the leading edge on the growth. As the grain consolidates it will lose the rhizo apearance and look denser. A hella rhizomorphic fully colonized grain bag would also be a major sign of contamination.

So yea the culture should still grow rhizo when it gets squirted to grain. But any cube mycelium leading edge should look rhizo on grain.

I read it fine. Rhizo on agar isn't a guarantee that it will be rhizo on grain
Rhizo is a property of what the mycelium is growing on more than the mycelium itself

Yea I'm agreeing with you, and on grain the leading edge is typically at least somewhat rhizomorphic for cubensis.

I'm completely aware rhizo is largely determined by what the mycelium is growing on. But it is also determined by the mycelium source. If you transfer rhizo mycelium to grain the chance is way higher that the grain mycelium will be rhizo (than if you transfered tomentose), although, as you correctly stated, it's not guaranteed. I'm just asking, are your chances of seeing rhizo in grain just as good if you went agar > LC > grain rather than agar > grain?

of course it can and likely will stay as such. Especially if you do not stir. Why would something an agar behave too differently its cutting through and taking names and numbers. Also I don't stir my lcs too much they always seems to match my plates after a while especially. Sometimes they stop being rhizomorphic on the plate on its own, not talking about that.
