Here's a habitat shot for people trying to find the right types of parks to look around:

And, interestingly enough, found a stump nearby with both oyster mushrooms and what I'm pretty sure is enoki (still small to say for sure) side by side!

Damn is that all mulch? Spray spores on that whole thing

Salamanders, cicada holes, eagle nest and baby ovoids. Feeling a little wonky today from moderna #2 but will probably get out a little

So far this is absolutely the worst ovoid season I’ve ever had in over 10 years. Pathetically tiny fruits, rotten fruits and mulch spots doing nothing. 😡

I've noticed this year we haven't gotten the big 2 or 3-day long rainstorms, just a few showers here and there so far

This was my working hypothesis. But in looking at the data the last few months are pretty close to average. Maybe we're too cool?
I wonder if last year being a boom (so I've heard) doesn't make it more likely this year is a bust.

The season barely just started, I would think that it's just the normal year to year variation, last year ovoids were oddly abundant, things are just taking a bit longer to kick off. One would think it's pretty normal for things to not follow last year's season precisely, I am still somewhat new to hunting in general so maybe they do follow a strict schedule, but if not, I would assume it's just expected variation.

Fruiting here is very prolific despite the late start but I have noticed they are much smaller than usual as you mentioned. Makes it more tedious to pick and clean them, it's kinda pissing me off but the hauls are really good so I cant complain really. Filled a few book bags in a thunderstorm yesterday, I've noticed they are much easier to find in the rain, as all the vegetation gets droopy and matted but the mushrooms are reaching for the sky!
Also regarding the rotten ones, I've noticed the weather fluctuations are causing them to decay much faster mold, and insect damage has never been a problem this early in the season before.
Regardless of how fruitful this season ends up I'm very interested to see how they respond to these odd environmental conditions.
It is important to remember we are not just foragers, we are researchers studying these fruits in such intimate conditions for the first time in recorded history, I'm starting to think ovoids are a keystone species in the ecosystems they are native too, their aggressive mycelium does wonders decaying wood faster than any other mushrooms I've ever seen. They are literally creating the rich soil beneath your toes so that plants countless plants and animals can thrive.
I thought we were having a bad season until I started hunting new ground, in parts of the plains I wouldn't usually look happy hunting everyone

No Ovoids today. Honestly someone may have gotten to them before me. There was someone driving out as I was going in and the little cluster of pins I left 3 days ago showed no signs of ever existing. Should have at least been there rotten if they weren't snatched up.
Found this though:

You can feel the dryness in the ground, though. It was not this crunchy and loud the past few years.
