Noob with Noob Questions
    #27287382 - 04/30/21 01:45 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hello Shroomery. Long time lurker, first time poster. This is my 2nd time trying shoeboxs and Im starting to get confused. Last time I only did one tub and had awful results, a couple of these look like theyre going to pin really nicely however, one of them for sure is bacterial. I had a couple of questions. Theyre crumbled BRF cakes in coir. I apologize if I leave anything out and have to add a few questions and for the general low quality of the post. Im not great at this here innerwebs.
I also realized Ive made a dumb mistake taping up the sides, ill be using liners from here on out. Heres some pics and questions. THe 2nd shoebox is the one w the bacterial contamination.

1) Will leaving the bacterial one in the greenhouse contaminate the others?

2) How much RH should I have in the tent? I have this reptile fogger thing I bought at the pet store but the more ive read the more Im not sure if I should use it, I have another fogger thats like a small disk type thing I might try out instead, ive read some alright things about those.

3) Should I leave the lids on or take them off? Ive left them on this whole time until about an hour ago because they all look so damn wet. I dont know if that has to do with them all likely being bacterial or if theyre just too wet because a couple of them do look pretty healthy. Should I put the lids back on? They dont look as wet in these pictures as they actually are in real life.

4) Should I open the greenhouse from time to time or fan for FAE? I have a fruiting shoebox of PEUncuts that have the "fuzzy feet" thing going on and very skinny fruits. This made me think too little FAE and is one reason I took the lids off. Heres what I mean:

5) Any suggestions on what to do from here in general?

Sorry one last questions I forgot.

6) Would it benefit me to case them with verm? I have some left over.

Sorry if these are annoying common questions :frown: Even just some basic advice about what to do next, especially the lids and if I should move the bacterial one out in order not to risk my others. I read somewhere bacteria wont hop from fully colonized subs to fully colonized subs but I dont know if thats true or not.

The last 2 pictures are too wet and partially waterlogged.
If you placed them in your tent, i`d move them out,
give them a few hours open air or even finish the flush open air.

Verm wouldn`t make sense, since it`s there to spend moisture.

It`s hard to dial in a martha for cubes, they don`t like
to be misted and fanned on a schedule, that is better done by your eyes.

An infected box/tray in a greenhouse with foggers, fans and other stuff
doesn`t sound good to me, it can easily be spread.

Don't use a greenhouse.

Don't case them. A thin layer of coir on top when you make them is OK.

There is no reason to use liners.

What to do with the one you believe is bacterial is a judgment call. Many times you will get fruits anyway. If it's bacterial, it will probably lead to early trich, but that isn't the environmental disaster many people think it is. As soon as you think it's not going to be productive, dump it. Or dump it immediately if it makes you more comfortable.

It's best to learn from recent teks, because so much of what's considered necessary or useful is outdated information. I recommend Bodhi's teks because they are simple and effective.

Open air with the lid totally off or flipped?

Its not on a schedule or anything, im on unemployment right now so Im just chilling with them all day and while im dialing in my technique ive been babysitting them xD. Is it still okay to use it if im doing everything by eye?

Wow no liner, huh? Youre the first person ive ever heard say that.

So its okay to fruit it with the rest of them? Im pretty sure its still going to get some fruits, I see some pins already. I just dont want to spread the bacteria everywhere if that can happen. Its such a large colony its visible. Looks like gel on the top of the mycelium, gross.

Can you link me to something specific?

Also what should I do about bottom pins? How do I harvest them/make sure they dont rot between flushes?

As far as not using a greenhouse, what if I just stop using the fogger and use it as, shelves with plastic covering? Since I have it and any protection from my dusty room is good.
If im not using anything to add humidity and dont have a fan in there should I leave the lid on, take it off? I assume if its filled with shoeboxes itll have pretty high RH anyway.

Are things too wet if the sides are wet?

Sometimes side pins can be removed with a butter knife; bottom pins would be tough, but if you're in between flushes you might be able to take the whole substrate out, remove them and put it back in.

I would say don't use the greenhouse at all.

I get 95% of my information from Bodhi. Navigation is Mushroom cultivation rules and sticky thread near the top listing of this forum, then click on Teks Trusted Cultivator Methods, etc.

The bag definitely works, Bod knows his stuff. People also dub tub them (put another tub on top) which is nice if you want to see what's going on in there. Others just let the shrooms push the lid off the when they get tall enough. Shoeboxes are pretty forgiving.

Damn, I just found green mold on my PEs. There was actually green growing on the caps of the fruits, so I picked the one that looked the youngest and with no visible contam, split it open in my SAB and tried to clone it. Hopefully I can clean it up and keep it going or Ill have to reorder these spores because my dumbass doesnt have a master of the PEU.

If I hadnt found mold whats the best way to rehydrate the cake between flushes? Just a misting or a full dunk?

The plastic bag with small holes cut in it is very effective for shoeboxes. They allow enough light through and provide room for big mushrooms. They're free, and you can adjust humidity conditions with the number and size of holes.

I said earlier, don't use liners. There is one good use for liners. They do aid the cleanup time. But it takes me more time to put liners in than clean up so I don't do it.

Little white dots can be primordia or the beginning of trich, which seems to start out as little white pebbles on the surface before it turns green. You will know soon enough.

It's been so long since I did PF-tek I can't remember whether you re-dunk or mist heavily; probably re-dunk and put some more verm on them.
