Drinking Jamaica Blue Mountain Wallenford Estate coffee.. so you don't have to.
    #27284760 - 04/28/21 07:17 AM (2 years, 8 months ago)

I procured 3.5 ounces of whats supposed to be the finest coffee in the world not shat out by a civet cat.

3.5 ounces freshly roasted beans for a ridiculous sum.

Quote:

So, indulge in a cup of luxury with Wallenford 100% Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee. Produced from carefully selected coffee beans and processed to meet exacting standards this coffee is famous for its perfection in flavour, intense aroma and balanced taste.

When I opened the package, granted, the smell was a nosegasm. Exquisitely refined like fine hash.

I took a portion and ground it, then proceeded to make a cup of drip coffee of it.

Standing next to the coffee machine I noticed to my dismay there wasnt the rich aroma of my treasured East African coffees.

I poured the glass, in a large cognac glass to savour the aroma... that wasn't there.

It was like having gotten Covid inbetween smelling the unbrewed coffee and the coffee itself.

Worrisomely: no oily shiny spots on the coffee, like is standard with African coffees.

So, low in scent, low in oil.

Got seated, in my comfort zone, and drank it.

Solid but dry woody cocoa. More woody than nutty. Dry! There was some acidity..

To be frank, quite disappointed.

This has nothing of a sun-rich Kenya AA grade or Tanzanian Peaberry. This was barely up to a plain Yirgacheffe, a good Yirgacheffe would outdo it, for a several times lower price.

A big disappointment.

It just further underlined my aversion to american coffees (South America & carribean) and my favor for the rich creamy flavor of coffees that have been baking in the African sun.

Its a good coffee, but an 8 in one accustomed to 9s and 9.5s.

Never again.

I havent drank coffee in months, I get the alleged best, and it lets me down.

Disappointing.

For this 3.5 ounce I could have gotten a pound of any of several African coffees that outdo it.

Interesting. I've heard rumors of folks selling shitty coffee with blue mountain labels. I can't verify it but maybe you got that.

I'd love to know your favorite coffees. I very much appreciate a good cup o joe.

I certainly would hope so.

The 3.5 oz package was as pricy as a kilo of peaberry Yirgacheffe at the same vendor.

I stand corrected!

Coffee to me shines the most in the early morning hour, when you are freeing yourelf from sleep's embrace.

This morning was a very early morning, so at 7 AM I brewed a cup of Jamaica Blue Mountain Wallenford Estate coffee, the right way, so ground 1 portion beans from the airtight dark container into powder, this time added a little less water to compensate for the less-rich flavor.

No, this is not the coffee you brew so that the whole house smells the coffee is coming, there is little brewing aroma.

In the cup (cognac glass)  too, little scent.

At 7 AM though, before breakfast, the flavor was a true 9 out of 10, still I like oily African coffees better but yes, this is good coffee.

As I finished the coffee, the caffeine was already picking me up a bit, but gently, like it should be, no Robusta violence, pure Arabica.

At the coffee hour, a 9 out of 10 for me.

Is this 3.5 ounce worth 35 ounces of peaberry Yirgacheffe? Certainly not, but good it is.

It IS overhyped, but still a good coffee.

I like South American coffees the best, probably Guatemalan is my fave. I had a buddy go to Jamaica earlier this year and he brought me back some authentic Blue Mountain Beans and I  didn't really care for them either, not something I would spend the big bucks on like he did though, I think he said they cost like $40 for a 1lb bag of beans. He also brought me back a fifth of Jamaica rum that's really good but that's for another thread

I also like Sumatra coffee and Hawaiian Kona coffee. I guess I haven't tried any African coffees that I know of, but I'm going to be on the lookout to try some

Something like an order of magnitude more JBM is sold at retail than is produced at the Wallensford estate.

Caveat emptor!
