Mycelium turning brown?
    #27284416 - 04/27/21 10:09 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

My mycelium is turning brown in a lot of spots.  Is this part of the pinning process?  Or is something wrong?  This is day 11 since starting the monotub. Temps have stayed at 68-73*, humidity has been 92-100%.  Please let me know what you think.

Thanks for the help!

:whathesaid: to both posters above.

I see knots forming in the first pic. It might fruit if you let it keep going.

Don't mist anymore unless it's completely necessary for those totes.      Excess moisture and lack of airflow will make it worse.

It's just weird how it happened in all areas at once.  Could it be that my substrate is just too dry?  Here's a timelapse from last night 2am until noon today when the light turned off.  The rest happened in the dark.  But it almost seems like it dried out (to my untrained eye).

I would guess that contam would start in one area and spread but this all happened in certain sections all at once. . .

i have no doubt it could also be bacterial, but i have seen my subs discolor like this due to drying out as well. did it always have little beads of moisture on the surface? or was it noticeably dry when you noticed the color?

here is one of my literal first tubs, did MS syringe to PF tek & i’m very confident my first batch wasn’t bacterial as it went a few flushes & then i threw it out since i was getting very little return off the latter flushes. i just let the tub get way too dry (that’s when i got the yellowing)  & then tried to over compensate w the misting. caps are cracked due to drying out & subsequent over misting

those thicker patches of mycelium where the browning happened always seemed to not keep the water beads but I'd spray once a day or so.  I still have other areas in the tub that are keeping the beads and still white and pretty.  And the side that browned the worst is the end I have opened up for looking and fanning and whatnot.  It's the end toward me when I go in the closet.

if that’s the case, it’s definitely just dry. fanning doesn’t do anything so you can forget about it. is that end always open? if so you may want to rethink your mono tub design. idk if it’s unmodified, but i haven’t had a ton of success fruiting the way bod does in his tek. my air is too dry. misting once a day after full colonization isn’t bad by any means, but the dry patches are clearly a problem

i’ve also notice that once the sub gets dry like that it doesn’t hold moisture as well as a healthy sub would. has more of a sheen to it when misted vs little beads of water

Oh, I'm definitely rethinking my monotub . . . lol. This is my grow thread.
First Post, First Grow (fully automated monotub)

I overcomplicated it and probably dried it out trying to dial in the humidity sensor and fans.  But I'm learning I guess.  Going to ditch the toys on the next tub.

I'm leaning towards throwing a moist coir/verm substrate casing layer on the top of it all in the morning and hope it rejuvenates/saves it.  I have left over "previously sterilized" substrate in the pressure cooker I put in my fridge after prepping this tub with plans to sterilize it again for the next one (made too much by accident).  But I'll leave it out overnight to warm up to room temp and put a layer on when I get up.  It should be pretty clean still.  Meanwhile, I'll keep my mono at 99% humidity and see if that helps until then.

Thoughts?

It's not really pulling from the sides much, and the coir I can see looks darker.

Looks iffy to me idk.

Does it smell weird at all?

oh my god, yeah i'd say you overdid it hahahaha. the techy stuff is always fun in theory but mushrooms are so god damn easy it almost always ends up being detrimental. martha set ups are sick esp for edibles but modding single tubs/using fans & heat pads etc almost always backfire. if you want something you can get techy on, cannabis is probably a better route lol. i get it though, it's fun to diy & try to do new things, just isn't really necessary with mushrooms

are you just using coir as your substrate? you don't need to sterilize it. you can just use boiling/hot water, or even cold tap water. coir & verm are inherently resistant to contamination being non-nutritious, so it's only gonna come from unclean spawn. save yourself the time & electricity or gas. a casing layer may not be a bad option, but even if you don't you should still see SOME mushrooms

i don't think it's really a culture thing, i think it's just something that happens when the sub dries out. i've never really had my tubs turn blue from being too dry; it's usually the weird browning. cakes seem to bruise blue from drying out for whatever reason though. never grown them but just seen the threads.

it looks like they're using a liner from what little i can see from the picture, which would probably stick to the sub as it shrank, assuming it did at all. also, it's doing this in patches where air exchange is more significant, it still could be bacterial for sure, but it definitely dried out. though i will say, if the spawn was from the colonizing corn kernels in the link psilogeek posted, those jars look suspiciously bacterial to me. not familiar with corn as a grain at all, but it looks to have some of the signs of bacteria that i see on oats

Odd. Never seen that as a result of drying, only bluing. Add it to the list.
