i only have a 10psi PC at the moment and unfortunately i do not have another option yet. i am almost ready to go agar > grain for the first time but i want to confirm this before i go ahead.
from what i have been reading 2.5 to 3 hours should be good. i am using rye grain and 3x 1L jars.
thank you for the help

I mean you're gonna have 70% success with normal pot. Even to psi PC should do the trick. I have 12psi and 3h works perfectly.

I've sterilized agar very effectively at 10PSI. Use this pdf to calculate the time you need. 10PSI equals 115.6°C.
This means the lethal rate is 0.281 as fast as the lethal rate at 121.11°C. This is provided on a spreadsheet of calculations of lethal rates depending on time, but there is a formula you can use as well to find the lethal rate.
The time can then be calculated by rate * time:
rate(1) * time(1) = rate(2) * time (2) 1 x 30 mins = 0.281 * X X = 30 mins / 0.281 X = 106.8 mins
So 3 hours will be plenty of time. Make sure to include a sterilization strip as well for good measure.
I think the water level depends on the size of the PC. Mine is 24L and I need 2.5 inches of water.

You mean 10psi not 110.

Sterilization strips are absolutely useless for mycology. They don't indicate sterilization they indicate that something was ran. They're useful for hospitals because the next shift can see oh ok this waste has been already autoclaved. If it's just you at your own home it's pretty hard to forget you sterilized something. It's literally just tape that changes color at a specific temperature. You could PC something for 1 minute and the stip would change color but nothing would actually be sterilized.

I did two hours for 32 oz (~1 myco quart) PP5s in my cheap shitty European PCs (~8-10 psi). No bacterial problems, only occasional mold due to filter failure (two layers micropore on the side), but that was less than 5%. 90 minutes sterilization gave bacterial jars.

thank you for the replies everybody
just to be clear @Sekuen i am doing grain jars, not agar. how would i use that table to calculate for that? i cant see how you got your 30 minute time. is that the time at 15psi for agar? so my time would come to around 300+ minutes for grain at 10psi? (assuming 90mins at 15psi).
if so i think i will take the risk with the 2-3 hour mark suggested by others and see how that goes first.
shame about the sterilization strips, i was very excited to read that they existed for a moment.
thank you all very much for the help

Sorry for the confusion. The instructions for my sterilizer say to sterilize for 30 minutes at 15 PSI, but the pdf assumes 15 minutes at 15 PSI is adequate. To be on the safe side I would assume 30 minutes at 15 PSI is adequate for sterilization. This should work for both agar and grain as long as steam can get into the container.
90 minutes at 15 PSI would be a bit overkill in my opinion. But there's no harm in going longer just to be extra sure

interesting, that is much quicker than i have been seeing. i have been reading that it depends on the size of the jars you are using, how much grain is in there and the material of the jars etc.
i think i will do my initial jars at 3 hours, then do some test jars and slowly reduce the timing and see what happens. you might have just saved me many many hours of sterilization
thank you for the help
