Last year for me wine caps where about 10-14 days ahead of ovoids fruiting very close area to each other.  It was one of the last days in April I did really good in SE Ohio.  Going to start hunting next week.  I am about 90 miles from the prime zone so I got to plan with the weather well.  People posting pics and general area help give me a good idea on timing too, thanks.

Nothing from the more local mulch patch yet.  The ovoid mycelium expanded to cover a pretty large area.  I cased some of it this year peat/coir/verm and planted grass and wild strawberry seed in casing mix.  Grass came up but no sign of strawberries.  Got the rest covered with leaves.  I hope it fruits, got nothing last year from it.  I think I am a lot better shape this year.

Just checked one of my woodchip spots (in southern NY) and it's fruiting pretty well. Some of the shrooms are a week old, so I would say that for anyone in the southern NY/ NJ area, the ovoid season has definitely kicked off for any woodchip/mulch hunters (I've heard that woodchip spots supposedly start fruiting earlier than wild fruits).

Curious what your thoughts would be for hunting further north in Ny?  I spent the winter reading over the past threads here and think I’m in a similar situation that you were at last year but unfortunately ~100 miles further north.  I’ve seen the past finds in southern New York and as far north as Binghamton but Id like to know what those of you with more experience then me (second year with actives) think about the possibility of finds this far north/east?

If I were you, I would wait until the temperature is consistently 60-70 degrees and there has been sufficient rain (probably in the next week or two for northern NY), then just scour mulch/woodchip patches. There are definitely ovoids fruiting up there, there is no doubt about that. So just get out there once the conditions are right and scour the woodchip/mulch patches anywhere you see them (I've literally found ounces of ovoids fruiting in a woodchip patch in front of a library).

100 miles doesn't really warrant a huge change in temperature, I would guess that the ovoid season has probably already started up there (at least for woodchip/mulch patches).

Awesome, thank you, that’s what I wanted to hear!! I know we’re always a few weeks behind the city in terms of weather/seasons I just wasn’t sure if I was wasting my time or not.  I didn’t realize you had found so many in your area, that’s reassuring.

I’ve been out a few times recently scoping out spots, but I agree with you and think it’s still a tad too early, probably this coming week though. Still no morels out here yet only a couple of early Verpa so I don’t think I’ve missed them yet.

I take it from your library finds that you have found some on wood chips that were not near streams/rivers?  I may have to expand my search areas a bit then if that’s the case.

Yea wasn't near any streams, however, it was part of a garden area which was frequently hosed.

Nothing in all the spots I checked out today. Though, I usually don't find anything before May, so I'm not really surprised

That's weird, would've thought the further south you are the earlier the fruiting happens, guess it's mainly genetics.

I’m an hour north and no love here either. Although we did start finding morels near Lake Moraine last week. Looks like this rain tonight is staying south unfortunately.

Western PA here as well.. been checking the past week, still haven't seen any.  Hopefully the rain we had saturday helps us out.. if no, the rain this weekend will.  Any thoughts on how the 2 80F days are gonna affect things?

My friend used to find them in Rochester parks on mulch a decade ago. I started looking a bit south of there in natural habitats a few years ago without any luck. They grow here 100%, but it may be only in patches developed by hunters at this point.

If you have ramps and morels out where you're at start scoping our parks with mulch and small creek beds with the right habitat.

I definitely meant to get out this weekend but was a lazy shit instead.. I'm determined to find these fuckers or caerulipes in the finger lakes area. Hell, I'd even propagate them if I had the means.

Last year I found a few cluster I really believe were caerulipes, but I had to toss. North of Watkins/Montour along the Catherine Valley Trail as well as a few lone specimen near buttermilk falls in Ithaca that I was sadly unable to grab that I'm sure were ovoids.

While I agree, I've had some trouble locating wild ovoids here in southern NY, they definitely grow in the wild/places that aren't personal patches. I bring back my earlier example of multiple ounces I've seen growing directly in front of a library (someone would have to be pretty bold to make that their personal spot lol). The issue I see us NY hunters running into is that the further north you go the less common they seem to be in general, that, as well as there being significantly fewer hunters meaning that the rate at which ovoids are being spread is a lot slower compared to those with  many hunters who create personal patches/spread spores.
