I meant the seedlings are green and purple.  I do remove the seed pod and stem and get more buds.  The newer buds are definitely smaller but it's almost like two harvests from the same plant, I know it sounds weird and unbelievable but I think it's just a matter of timing.  Or like you said 2-4 pods/plant.

I get enough uncaramelized latex to fill a small jar by bringing them inside to harvest.  I cut just below the collar and squeeze letting them sit in a Pyrex dish, then scrape when dry.  I'm terrified of lancing outside, they're visible to any passersby and my neighbor's son is a state trooper.  I get a nice effect vaping the dried milk but I have never tried the darkened residues to compare.

I was kinda :stoned: when I was reading this thread yesterday, and yea I just realized you meant the seedlings were green & purple and not the flowers/petals lol. I was imaging a flower with green petals, not seedlings lol. I get what you mean tho.

I'm surprised that your plants develop more buds/blooms after removing a seed pod, I wouldn't expect that at all. How long after the petals have fallen off do you remove the pod? I'm assuming you are cutting/removing the pod long before the seeds inside the pod are ripe/mature? I just have the impression that once a plant has produced ripe seeds it's not going to try to produce any more flowers. That does surprise me.

My plants naturally produce 2 to 4 pods per plant with out being cut/topped. Both the "Black Swan" variety I grew and the variety I grew last year produce multiple pods per plant with out being cut/topped. But a few plants do produce only 1 single pod, usually the smaller plants that are stunted or have their roots crowded with other plants.

These are the tops of two plants I had growing last year, racing a sunflower to the sky, multiple pods on each....

A damn gopher has found its way into my main patch of flowers yesterday, already lost 3 of my best looking plants in less than 2 days. The fucking things drive me insane.

Lol yeah. :tongue2:  Pretty sure the reason for the seedlings being purple is due to frost/cold weather though green and purple petals would be hella tight.

Fucking gophers, not sure how to get rid of them...

I harvest after the crowns flip and get that dusty blue color similar to ones in your pic.  The plant typically dies very quickly after going to seed.  I only leave a few pods out to fully mature for seed collection, they seem to lose their alkaloids this this way but I still munch on 'em anyways.

If poppies aren't thinned out they choke each other out competing for space and grow poorly.  One plant can easily take up a 12" diameter.

Some porn from 2007, approximately 15'×1'

Trying to get a monocrop of the last pic this year.  Hens and Chicks are really interesting too.  Was gonna buy a bunch of rare stuff from World Seed Supply last winter but never got around to it.

If you grow a variety they will tend towards hybridization and weird mutations the following season.  I think the pirst pic has characteristics of Peony and Persian White.  The latex was a bubble gum pink color with a unique flavor.

My first flower bloomed yesterday, and another bloomed this morning!

They totally surprised me lol.

I saw the buds but I really didn't think they were that close to blooming. I figured they had another 5 to 7 days at least, guess not.

I looked at pics I took of my poppies last year, and interestingly last year my first bloom was on this day too! I sowed at slightly different times last year than I did this year, interesting that the first bloom occurred on the same exact day.

What is the detriment of not thinning poppies? I kinda figured I'd let em go au'natural.

If they are not thinned out and they grow crowded/close to each other, then they will be relatively tiny and produce small pods and fewer pods compared to if they grew with plenty of root space.

Ideally, I hear they should be thinned/spaced to at least 10 to 12 inches apart.

Most of mine end up around 6 to 8 inches apart, some closer, some farther.

I used to flood gophers out of their tunnels with a hose and when they come to the surface I would grab & place them in a bucket, then release them in a natural habitat outside of the neighborhood. (I try to not kill unless necessary)

But their tunnel system has become so deep & expansive that doesn't work anymore...I've tried setting traps and almost every time the time the gophers either pull the traps into the tunnel, or the traps go off with out catching the gopher and they get buried by the gopher. They are a MAJOR pain in the ass around here.

If I had the $ I would lay down steel mesh/hardware cloth in the ground a couple feet down underneath the spots where I grow things. But I'm usually on a small budget.

Poisons are an option but that's really not something I want to use, kinda goes against my "way of life".

So when you harvest the pods after the crown has flipped up, your plants start to produce more buds/flowers after cutting off the pods?

Because I harvest mine around that same time too, and they never produce more buds/flowers after that, they dry out & die soon after the pods have been cut.

Those pics of the flowers you posted in that other post are beautiful! Gnarly colors!

Do you know what variety those are?

What ever variety I'm growing RN (and last year), that's what most of them look like.

White petals with purple streaks. But I've heard that's a pretty common trait that a few different cultivars can display.

:yesnod:

I think the most pods I've seen one one plant was seven total.

Pretty sure the white and purple were Giganteums from a bottle of McCormick seeds.

Interesting.

My plants never do that.

After I cut the pod(s) the plant is "done", it dies & starts to dry out basically the very next day.

I haven't had a single plant develop more flowers after I've cut the pods.

And good to know the "unknown" variety I'm growing might be giganteums, looks like it.

I spent two hours carefully weeding all the vegetation which had buried my poppies. Probably gonna pop any day now.

That sound is soooo gnarly!

I can imagine hanging in a hammock, tripping or stoned, and getting totally lulled into a trance by that sound. (Or a headache lol)

Seems intense lol.

My main patch of flowers is almost done blooming, they've been blooming for about 3 weeks now. Some were sowed a bit earlier than others and one part of the patch received more early season sunlight than the other so that patch has been blooming over a stretch of time instead of all at once.

I have more poppies planted in a few other spots around the yard. I actually got quite a bit this time around, seems like a lot more than last year, maybe 50 to 75 plants or so in total. But nearly 1/2 of them are relatively small.

I've grown only two varieties over the past several years ("Black Swan", and what I'm pretty certain are "Giganteum"), and this year I've started to notice several different traits/phenotypes popping up from them inter/cross breeding over the years. Some neat looking ones that display traits of both varieties have popped up.

I also tried "crossing" some this year that had two different traits by rubbing/fucking the flowers into one another lol (two plants with different traits were growing close enough to each other that I was able to rub their flowers/pollen into each other). With all the bees/pollinators no doubt a lot of pollen between flowers was getting mixed up anyway  .

The tea has been nice  .

After two year of failure I think I managed to get it right this year. Some of these are growing two inches taller every day.

Missed out this season due to being in flux, but I'm going to plant a bed this fall to give a head start.  Love those fall started giants.

Small pods but look
Like they have lots of latex. When should I harvest? Should I cut slits first?

I saw a stink bug on them earlier probably what’s poking holes in the pods

WHat strain is that? They seem to be happy there. Leave the biggest one to go fully to seed right?

I would not cut/score them as that's illegal's. Harvest only and dry for floral arrangements. THey are quite stunning in an arrangement.

you have a nice little place there to grow stuff. You should garden more.
