Seems like it could work pretty well. I may try this out.

This tek is awesome. I did my first shoe boxes and they are colonizing like crazy.

Does it matter the ratio when adding to water for soaking? Also, does it hurt to add some to sub as well, or is that overkill?

I've combed through several pages of this and it seems like nobody gets the green regularly and I do so I'm just curious what people might think I'm doing wrong...
I use a corn tek that has me soak corn for 24 hours, cook for an hour, strain for 30-60 minutes, and PC for 1.5 hours. After which, once cooled, I do grain to grain transfers. I generally let them go for 1 month and shake once a week. I've followed this bucket tek to a T almost, except I believe my holes in the tub might be slightly bigger as I noticed with my tubs they seemed to need more FAE. At my last house, almost each of the tubs I would do would get trich at some point, if not before first flush, atleast by the third, and now at a new house, I've got 10 tubs that have been out of the bags for 5 days, and 2 of them already have trich before they even began fruiting.... What am I doing wrong? With the bucket tek, I usually stir at 45 minutes, and let them sit till cooled, at which point, I dump about 5-6 quarts of spawn into the bucket, mix, and go to tubs with tape and a bag. I do put about 1/4 inch of the remaining coir verm as a casing. . I just don't understand how I regularly encounter trich... Please help!!!

Do y'all use different ratios with sub, field density, etc. with different strains?

Did this for my first grow and the substrate turned out super wet.
Really want to stress that you should try less water first and then add more only if needed in order to dial in your particular coir brand.
For example, what worked for me in the end was:
650 grams coir 1,8 l / 1,9 qt verm 2,3 l / 2,4 qt water
Even then slightly too moist. Will try even less next time.

I have some quick noobie questions. I hope one of you good people might offer answers or perspectives in reply.
So Golden Teacher does well colonizing on a BRF medium (specifically, sterilized Brown Rice Flour & Vermiculite). Q1: Why switch to Coir & Vermiculite as a fruiting substrate ?
Q2: If the mycelium colonizes the BRF medium happily, why wouldn't they fruit from the addition of several extra kilos of sterilized BRF? Q3: Is it all down to the cost of the substrates ?
Q4: Why isn't gypsum added to this Coir substrate ? Q5: Or alternatively, what is the reasoning behind the addition of gypsum to the GVC tek ?
Thank you for your help. Thank you!

A1:your adding space and water instead of nutes.
A2: they would,it's just when you scale up, you must also scale up steriliy when working with medium that are nutritious.
A3:not necessarily. Depends on your equipment and needs.
A4:it has been found that gypsum is mostly unnecessary
A5:buffering and some minerals
That's what I know

Both aren't necessary, but if you want to try them they have to be properly pasteurized. Holding the substrate @180°F for and hour and should be done in bags or jars so steriliy holds up after.
Edit The guano is what needs pasteurization, not the shells my b

In regards to this tek, I would just stick to coir/verm for your first run. This tek utilizes boiling water poured over a contam resistant sub in a bucket.
It takes into consideration that coco coir and vermiculite are by default contam resistant, to a certain degree. That being said when you pour boiling water into the bucket you get a substrate that is partially sterilized and mostly pasteurized. (which is not a big deal for strictly coir/verm).
If you add ANYTHING else, this would require proper pasteurization.
This method only accounts for coir/verm.
I would suggest sticking to the tek 100%, then once you have at least 1 successful harvest under your belt using said tek, start changing variables.
Stick to the tek.

Hoping y’all can help a newbie out here. I have five BRF half pint jars colonizing right now. I’d like to transfer to bulk substrate, but I’m confused as to the proportions needed. Since I’m using 5 half pint jars as opposed to five quarts, should I cut my coir and verm and water amounts by 4? And would this be enough substrate to then split into two shoeboxes? Thanks!

Try this

Nichrome said: There is stuff hiding in cakes. No point in spreading it around. If they are colonized and look right then their colonial immune system is working properly and has localized contaminates. Breaking them up and spreading it around is never a good idea. If you need to case them or have a uniform sub just lay an inch of coir down and pack the cakes on top of the coir like they fit in the box the jars came in. Then fill the gaps and add a top layer with more coir. It will fruit a full canopy just like any other tub with spawn and substrate.
BRF cakes don't make good loose sub and are best fruited out whole. Grain is best for loose spawn and bulk substrate. Diesel goes in a diesel engine. Don't put diesel in a gas engine.
