Geek squad works for the FBI
    #27280353 - 04/24/21 11:46 AM (2 years, 8 months ago)

Geek Squad actively seeks out information on laptops and phones they are entrusted with and relays that information to the FBI. There have been stories of geek squad accusing people of pedophilia only to find out it was just porn. The FBI pays them bounty money = incentive to lie.

Unfortunately I found all this out too late after I got suspicious of them. They had my computer for 6-8 weeks. I couldnt wipe it because it was stuck on the BIOS screen. They were to fix the harddrive. My google account is now telling me someone signed into my GOOGLE with a Linux machine on a date that had it. What horseshit. Id really like to sue. long story short word to the wise friendsdontletfriendsusegeeksquad

And after Geek Squad were shown to be fabricating malware infections to scam people, paid millions in fines and restitution, and people still keep trusting them with their computers.

Before sending a computer for repairs always use something like DBAN(https://dban.org/) to wipe out all HDDs from system with specialized software which makes almost impossible to recover.

Download and burn the iso, insert the disk, reboot from CD, and you are ready to go.

Geek squad has been known to act as government agents for about a decade now, it's not really new but people keep using the service because the name sticks and it's what the tech-illiterate remember.

Skip all the fancy stuff, just remove the harddrive(s). There is always the chance they may solder in a USB RF bug or flash in a virus but I doubt it. If someone needs to avoid those attacks then they better invest in checking over their own hardware before building a computer. The NSA was and probably still is bugging consumer hardware for the last decade or two as well.

Removing hard disks is the safest option if you can do it.

If you have solid state drives(SSD), then you should try to remove them since erasing software cannot properly erase them.

Most of the people using such services have no knowledge of computer hardware. Sometimes removing them can be tricky especially in slim laptops and requires specialized tools. Some laptops come with them mounted in most unusual places(require taking out multiple parts to access them) or soldered to motherboard. Also opening laptops will void the warranty.

In such cases, there is a need to use software like DBAN. Unless you send your laptop to NSA, so you are forced to choose advanced overwrite algorithms, then it's one-enter-key-does-all  .

I don't recall ever seeing a laptop that didn't have the hard drive readily accessible and removable, same with the modem card and some memory. There are user accessible panels, then there is disassembly.

Fungusul is right in that one mate. There's a lot of machines that are clamshell and full of glue and clips and stuff, difficult for the inexperienced and unequipped to access any part of the internals.

I fucked up a good amount of machines to varying degrees because of this in the past.

did you have your password saved to the computer? you should be using a password manager if this is a concern to you and not your browsers remember password feature, anon showed me how you can inspect element, delete a element, and poof the ******** becomes hunter2

If it was geeksquad I dont think there is any special reason they needed GNU/Linux to do it, as far as I know they could just do what I listed above, or copy/paste your browser profile

did Google give you an IP address along with the OS information? I had my reddit password the same as my reddit username, and reddit logs IP's and someone from Russia logged on to my reddit, unless it was a cray cray hacker spoofing his IP

I've seen many, more and more these days, and there's one such Dell in my lap right now.  Not a single access panel.  You have to remove the bottom housing, the display bezel, the keyboard, and some shielding to get to any of that.

I presume you refer to Big Sur

I talking about proprietary software in general, like 6 years ago, way before Big Sur my friend left her Macbook Air at my house, so I was using it in my living room, and I put it on the table and started watching TV, and my router is underneath the tv and I noticed it flashing like crazy, nothing was open on the Macbook, so I pick it back up, and google something like "how to tell what IP you are connected to in BASH' and I type in the command and it spits out an IP address, I plug it into an IP finder and it comes up as a California IP, then I scroll down more and it says ISP: Apple, the fricken thing was phoning home

theres only two options with software, either the user controls the program, or the program controls the user, the former is Free Software, the latter is proprietary/user-subjugating software

anyways after I caught the Macbook phoning home I stopped dual-booting Windows and GNU/Linux, and started running solely GNU/Linux

Mac has to phone home to report its status and running conditions and telemetry all the time, that is how they made the things so stable. The primary reason isn't about spying on personal data. Somehow MS do the same data dumping yet fail to make their products stable. I'm not saying I trust them or anything, I've been using Linux as well for a long time, but there is a legitimate reason to require this data. Pretty darn sure it's not a secret at a either, when you open the machine and turn it on first time it tells you exactly what it's going to send home and makes you agree whether you like it or not.
