Help with a Liquid Culture Tool Name
    #27277957 - 04/22/21 09:47 AM (3 years, 8 months ago)

I have recently started using liquid culture (LC) and everything is working as expected.  Currently, I just pour the LC from the LC jar into the grain jars.

I want a syringe tool that I can use to inoculate grains in bulk so that I don't have to open my LC jars.
The one I have in mind is a glass syringe with a ring for my thumb so I can pull liquid inoculate up via a self-healing port and inoculate more efficiently.

Or, maybe I am thinking totally wrong.  Is there a better way?

Thanks!

Socorex refilling syringe is the term you're looking for, another member (verum subsequentis i believe) said he used one for LCs for a while and it was handy.

I used to use a socorex syringe for LC but they clog up with mycelium in the springs of the 2 ball valves if the LC is very thick. Then it's a whole thing.

Pouring is a better option imo.

I quit using it because it was an extra unnecessary step. It was handy enough but certainly not needed. I just pulled mine back out of storage and thought it might be fun to use again. Then thought..... Fuck it. I'll hang it on the wall as art.

Thanks for all the replies.
Based on the replies, it seems pouring is best.

When I got mine, it was because I was terrified that I'd accidently poop in my LC when I dipped into it to streak on agar as a test. With it, I had hoped to be able to noc it up and never open it up again and risk pooping in it. Problem is I'd have to use it within a few days of having pumped some through to test or it'd jam up. I could avoid this issue by tilting the jar and pumping air into the unit but that was just another thing to do and I fell out of love with it. Plus, I got confident enough in working in the flow that I have almost no fear of accidental pooping.

I would just pour, but check out this liquid media extractor -

There is a link in the video description to purchase it if you're interested.

Pouring is best. The only problem I had with pouring was where to set the lid between pours so I devised a jar lid with four tiny gauge nails sticking out of it and screw it on a pint jar then I sterilize the nails after setting it in the flow, afterwards I can transfer the LC lid back and forth freely as many Tamils as I want given I don't place my hand directly above the "lid stand". I have never contaminated one of my cultures using this technique.

Moving from agar to LC inoculation was scary at first but sooo rewarding. I recently moved to bags and omg. I can fit 20 jars worth in the PC at once for a total of 40 jars per load! Saves so much time and space. I actually got my closet back (for the most part, I still have some LC and agar up there but it's soon to move to a grow closet.)

Haha. It's what he's looking for so I figured I'd link it. Would be cool for some master LC.

My thoughts exactly. My favorite (one of) sentence applies here though...

You do you boo.

I'd have a shitload of masters nocced up via free pour before he could get his pipette attached to that dangly deal that's just begging to pick up something nasty.

I'm a big fan of the LC gun. I made mine just like verum's. I shoot the bags up then seal with hot glue. Sometimes in my 2x2 FH pouring and resealing is cramped. The socorex method could work in a SAB even. I've had much better success with my socorex than pouring, but if I had a less cramped flowhood I'd probably go back to pouring. The valves clog up a little but with a few pumps they unclog themselves. Can recommend.

I've had them jammed up worse than a few pumps would clear. I've had them jammed to the point that nothing was possible but pausing the session and dumping to clean.

And then i've had the same happen but then lost the fucking microscopic spring when trying to clean it then have to order a $15 parts kit lmao. I think I got all mad and broken the glass barrel and then threw it away when I saw that it was $100 for a barrel.

Ha. I lost that spring once too. Learned to clean carefully after the first time. Luckily mine came with a spare.
