First Post, First Grow (fully automated monotub) * 1
    #27279894 - 04/24/21 01:40 AM (1 month, 19 days ago)

I am a former Soldier and have had issues with PTSD, depression, and anxiety for years and have tried all of traditional treatment methods with little success.  I've heard mushrooms help so decided to try it but couldn't find any locally so I decided to try to make my own.

I'm a geek and have been playing with Home Assistant for home automation for a couple years now and decided to use that to automate my grow to limit my chances of screwing something up.  So far so good.

March 28th - I ordered a B+ spore syringe online and inoculated 4 jars.
April 16th - Layered the colonized grain in with Coir/Verm substrate in a mono tub

It looks like it's fully colonized and I'm waiting for pins now.  I was colonizing at around 82*F but dropped it to 72-75 now with 12/12 light and FAE for 5 minutes every hour.

Here are some pictures of my setup.  Let me know what you guys think and if you see anything I might be doing wrong.

Hoping for the best...

I have thick skin.  Lol.  And I'll admit I really don't know what I'm doing yet.  Just watched a ton of youtube videos and read the "other" forums (since this site has been down since I first decided to try this).  I'll take all the feedback I can get; I'm sure at least some of it will help.  Lol.

I mostly overcomplicated it just because I enjoy doing the automation stuff and I figured being able to monitor it remotely and see the camera feed from anywhere I have internet access will help me keep the lid on and not fuss with it as much.  It's hard to be patient when you are hopeful and excited.

Thanks for the kind words!

Welcome mate :sporedrop:

You don`t just plan to do this,
you even have good looking mycelium, so that`s quite a good thing.

Of course overkill for cubensis, but you may do some gourmet mushrooms later on
that wouldn`t work without it.

Can`t help with all that stuff to dial in, never did something like that.
But as i said myc looks good so far.
In fact it`s not easy to mist and fan on a schedule, your eyes are better for that.
Often there`s even no misting and fanning needed.

Just keep up your work, i like your setup

I'd definitely recommend learning agar properly, and you'll be able to fish in the ocean for the rest of your life.

Others will tell you that the set up is excessive.

Nice setup but I'm not seeing any condensation anywhere?
That's generally quite an important factor.
How is the surface of your mycelium looking? Covered in droplets?

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn

You win the award for most tricked out tub of the year.
I'm not going to hate but I will say it's all unnecessary.
A good ol mono tub is sufficient and set and forget if you get her dialed in.
I believe your tub is a tad dry.
How many days has it been fully colonized?
I'd advise learning agar or sticking with spores to brf cakes to bulk.
Spores to grain is a sketchy game.

ive always been curious, what makes BRF better for spores or MSS than grain?

I just installed the top fans tonight and lost a lot of air moisture with the cover off for those 15 minutes and took pics right after that.  But I misted and got the humidity back up to 99% now so it should be ok.

I put the grain spawn and substrate layers in the monotub on the 16th.  So 8 days ago.  It's been fully covered in white since the 20th.  It colonized really fast.  Not sure if it was because of the 83* temps I had it at or if the top looks colonized but the lower layers are still working on finishing.

I definitely want to start doing the AGAR thing just to have back up genetics and eliminate the need to get more spores in the mail.  I actually ordered a 4 syringe sample pack with B+, Golden Teacher, Penis Envy, and Treasure Coast.  Started with B+ since it sounded like the most beginner friendly but am not sure what to expect from any of them yet.

BRF can handle some contam quite well,
you don`t need to think about bacterial endospores with it.

But as the others mentioned, a bad syringe is a bad syringe.
You`ll see clearly on agar what you`ll gonna spend to grains.

As you can see in the picture, a jar shot with that spores would have a hard time.

I know where u got that variety pack  lmao I use the same vendor. They rock, totally worth the $55. I love every single syringe I get from them, also, mention Shroomery on ur next order and they throu in a freebee of their choice.
I would of started with Golden Teachers if I were you, they seem to be the best for beginners imo but im just now growing B+ so mayb my mind will be changed. Ive got all those strains u listed too! Try the Albino Penis Envy on your next order, just beware PEs take forever and arent as resistant to contams. Especially APE, its pretty new.

"Aren't resistant to contams". Ha. Care to site that info? Clean spawn is clean spawn and is the result of clean inoculant, which is clean inoculant.

PE is slower, so there is more time for something shitty to take control if it's in there. That is true.

As goat said, BRF does better in handling bacteria. Many a syringe is plagued by bacteria. I once put spores from 12 different vendor syringes to agar and got bacteria and yeast on every single plate. Had those gone to grain, it'd of been a contam bonanza.

Picture of my mycelium today.  10 days after putting it in the monotub.  No pins yet and it just keeps on colonizing.  Hope I get pins pretty soon...

Sweet. Looks like you've got some hyphal knot formation going. Should see pins soon. Congrats.

Nice setup. I would look into some better electrical options as I'm sure you're overloading that circuit which can be dangerous.

My mycelium is turning brown in a lot of spots.  Is this part of the pinning process?  Or is something wrong?

That is not normal.
I believe your sub is too dry.

That makes sense, considering it all happened in all areas at once instead of spreading like I'd imagine a contam would...

Here's a timelapse from last night showing how it started until the lights turned off in case it helps.

If that's the case, how can I add moisture to just the sub?  I can crank up the humidity to stay at 100% for the next couple days and hope the sub soaks it out of the air maybe.  Or should I pull the sub with the liner and soak the bottom or something?

I thought I had it at field capacity when I prepped the tub but I'm a noob.  Or maybe my unnecessary fan holes on the top are letting too much evaporation happen (although the sides of the tub have stayed pretty moist).

It's possible you had correct field capacity but your high FAE was not matched with enough hydration to replace the water that was evaporating away. You can attempt to save it still by putting a casing layer on it.

This is why everyone says none of the extra stuff you have is necessary. Monotubs will provide perfect conditions even unmodified. They are truly set and forget.

You can still use the gadgets you have if you want but you need to spend some time dialing in those conditions

I'm realizing how correct you guys were!  lol.  I appreciate the help.  I can do some online searching too but what casing do you recommend?  Another thin layer of coir/vermiculite substrate?  Or just wet vermiculite?

I'll definitely be trusting the mono on the next attempt.  Trial and error is how we learn I guess.

Thanks again!
