First Post, First Grow (fully automated monotub) * 1
    #27279894 - 04/23/21 11:40 PM (2 years, 9 months ago)

I am a former Soldier and have had issues with PTSD, depression, and anxiety for years and have tried all of traditional treatment methods with little success.  I've heard mushrooms help so decided to try it but couldn't find any locally so I decided to try to make my own.

I'm a geek and have been playing with Home Assistant for home automation for a couple years now and decided to use that to automate my grow to limit my chances of screwing something up.  So far so good.

March 28th - I ordered a B+ spore syringe online and inoculated 4 jars.
April 16th - Layered the colonized grain in with Coir/Verm substrate in a mono tub

It looks like it's fully colonized and I'm waiting for pins now.  I was colonizing at around 82*F but dropped it to 72-75 now with 12/12 light and FAE for 5 minutes every hour.

Here are some pictures of my setup.  Let me know what you guys think and if you see anything I might be doing wrong.

Hoping for the best...

I have thick skin.  Lol.  And I'll admit I really don't know what I'm doing yet.  Just watched a ton of youtube videos and read the "other" forums (since this site has been down since I first decided to try this).  I'll take all the feedback I can get; I'm sure at least some of it will help.  Lol.

I mostly overcomplicated it just because I enjoy doing the automation stuff and I figured being able to monitor it remotely and see the camera feed from anywhere I have internet access will help me keep the lid on and not fuss with it as much.  It's hard to be patient when you are hopeful and excited.

Thanks for the kind words!

How many days has it been fully colonized?
I'd advise learning agar or sticking with spores to brf cakes to bulk.
Spores to grain is a sketchy game.

I just installed the top fans tonight and lost a lot of air moisture with the cover off for those 15 minutes and took pics right after that.  But I misted and got the humidity back up to 99% now so it should be ok.

I put the grain spawn and substrate layers in the monotub on the 16th.  So 8 days ago.  It's been fully covered in white since the 20th.  It colonized really fast.  Not sure if it was because of the 83* temps I had it at or if the top looks colonized but the lower layers are still working on finishing.

I definitely want to start doing the AGAR thing just to have back up genetics and eliminate the need to get more spores in the mail.  I actually ordered a 4 syringe sample pack with B+, Golden Teacher, Penis Envy, and Treasure Coast.  Started with B+ since it sounded like the most beginner friendly but am not sure what to expect from any of them yet.

Picture of my mycelium today.  10 days after putting it in the monotub.  No pins yet and it just keeps on colonizing.  Hope I get pins pretty soon...

My mycelium is turning brown in a lot of spots.  Is this part of the pinning process?  Or is something wrong?

I believe your sub is too dry.

That makes sense, considering it all happened in all areas at once instead of spreading like I'd imagine a contam would...

Here's a timelapse from last night showing how it started until the lights turned off in case it helps.

If that's the case, how can I add moisture to just the sub?  I can crank up the humidity to stay at 100% for the next couple days and hope the sub soaks it out of the air maybe.  Or should I pull the sub with the liner and soak the bottom or something?

I thought I had it at field capacity when I prepped the tub but I'm a noob.  Or maybe my unnecessary fan holes on the top are letting too much evaporation happen (although the sides of the tub have stayed pretty moist).

It's possible you had correct field capacity but your high FAE was not matched with enough hydration to replace the water that was evaporating away. You can attempt to save it still by putting a casing layer on it.

This is why everyone says none of the extra stuff you have is necessary. Monotubs will provide perfect conditions even unmodified. They are truly set and forget.

You can still use the gadgets you have if you want but you need to spend some time dialing in those conditions

I'm realizing how correct you guys were!  lol.  I appreciate the help.  I can do some online searching too but what casing do you recommend?  Another thin layer of coir/vermiculite substrate?  Or just wet vermiculite?

I'll definitely be trusting the mono on the next attempt.  Trial and error is how we learn I guess.

Thanks again!

Peat moss and vermiculite at a 1:1 ratio is a true casing layer as it is non-nutritious and the mycelium won't colonize it but it requires pasteurizing which can be difficult for a new grower to do.

Coir/verm will work well enough for now.

Bods unmodified tubs work well for most people but I personally have a hard time keeping the surface conditions moist when I use them. My RH is around 10%

I prefer Pastys EZ dial monotubs for dry climates

I don't have any peat moss but I have previously sterilized substrate left over in the pressure cooker I put in the fridge.  I'll pull it out and let it warm up overnight and put some on top tomorrow morning and keep the RH at 100% in the tub until then.  Hope that works...

After a casing layer, we've got pinnage boys and girls!  Woot woot!

Well here's today's grow progress.  I think this tub is going to be ok.  Not too bad for a first attempt if I do say so myself!  Thanks again for all the help!

Well I got 1 flush out of it.  37.75 grams dry.

After the first flush, I waited a couple days and noticed white mold took over.  I guess I got too confident.  Didn't really sterilize the scissors or my hands.  Figured the mycelium could handle contams at that point but it makes sense that it had a hard time considering I attacked it with scissors.  Lol.

I'm still happy with the success of my first try.  Thanks again for everyone who helped me get my feet wet.  Going to figure out this AGAR thing and have 4 colonized grain jars I plan to put in a tub this weekend.  Going to try the EZ Dial tub design this time and skip the gadgets to see if it fairs any better.

Here's some pics of the tub before during and after harvest.  Enjoy.

Decided to take these big guys down the night prior.

The next day it seemed like the rest were ready.

I used little scissors and cut them at the substrate.

A few days later, white fuzzies were all over so I took the block out and threw it in my wood line upside down.  Maybe the clean underside will sprout a few outside in the woods.

Oh shit!  lol.  Well if it wasn't contaminated before it is now after laying face down in the woods.  I guess I just keep on learning new stuff!  It did have a different smell to it too so that was what convinced me to get it out of the growing area asap.  Smelled a little rotty and the tops of some of the pins had white growing too.  Better safe than sorry I figure.  And I have enough from the first flush to last me a while.

On a side note, I'm trying to figure out the AGAR thing and ordered everything for the recipe Philly Golden Teacher put on YouTube but I forgot Karo syrup and don't have honey.  What does the corn syrup do?  Can I skip it?  Or should I wait until my next grocery store run next week?

Here's his video:

information overload I guess.  I read quite a few threads but there are so many recipes and hard to know what is the best one.  And it's easier to follow a video I guess.  Do you have one you recommend?  I have the plastic cups with lids, telephone agar powder, blue food coloring, potato flakes, and a temp gun right now.  And I can eat the potato flakes, so I'm not committed to the recipe yet.  lol.

I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks again gentlemen!

I want to say THANK YOU again to all of you who helped me on my first attempt!

I decided to start a journal.  If you want to see how I'm doing on my second grow and future ones, it seems like a more appropriate place.  You can check it out here:

Happy growing!
