First grow: really small mushrooms
    #27277476 - 04/21/21 09:33 PM (3 years, 8 months ago)

Hello people,

This is my first grow and I'm having very dissapointing results in the fruiting stage. I think I followed the PF Tek by the book but for some reason I've been getting only toothpick sized mushrooms out of my two cakes.

They are both Golden Teachers from a multispore syringe made from a 7 year old print, BRF cakes, SGFC made by the book. Both cakes dunked for 24 hrs in demineralized water before being rolled on verm. I've read almost every post I could find about this small fruits issue but I can't seem to get it right even though I'm almost certain it's a humidity/misting issue. I changed my ways from the first to second flush but still same results.

During the first flush, I lightly misted and fanned 5 times a day. The cakes seemed to be dry everytime I opened the SGFC so thats why I misted that much. By the end on the first flush I stopped misting that much since I had read that too much misting caused small shrooms, but the cakes seemed even dryer and the fruits I had at that stage seemed to dry up and even some brusing showed up on the cakes due to low RH.

Second flush: I dunked for 24 hrs and then decided to reduce misting to only 3 times a day (still fanning 5 times to provide FAE). I was hopeful that too much misting was the issue, but it was not the case. I got small shrooms and one of the cakes definetly didn't like the light mist only 3 times a day and finished up with only 1 cm shrooms as you can see in the pictures.

At this point I'm not sure what I need to correct to get decent sized mushrooms. In the first flush I think RH/FAE was right but got small shrooms, in the second flush I thought maybe RH/FAE was too high, corrected this, but still got small shrooms and an "aborted" flush. Any help would be appreciated, maybe it's just genetics but I'm not so sure. I still have one more chance to correct this on the third flush. I've rehydrated the perlite once a week just to be sure.

My setup:

What my first flush looked like (that was the total yield from the two cakes):

Probably just got bad genetics my man :/
Im realizing now why people do agar. Its a total crap shoot what kind of fruiting youre gonna get from MSS.

That's too bad...

I still have the same syringe I used to inoculate these two jars, if I use it again to make another grow will I have chances of having more normal sized shrooms or is this print doomed? I ask because my only alternative is to buy another print from a local vendor which in my mind has the same risk of having bad genetics. I really didn't have a single great fruit body to even think about cloning.

Well see in the syringe you have millions of different genetics floating around in there. The only way to start isolating the genetics is to start working with agar. Anytime you innoc from a multispore source its a roll of the dice.

PF tek is good for learning the basics and definitely can be viable if you wanna spend the time to get good at it, but unless you really like it for some reason I'd highly recommend moving on to monotubs ASAP. You get more out of them for less effort, there's just a bit more risk associated with contaminants, but really once the mushrooms are established the only way a contam will take over is if the mycelium is dying out.

If you want to stick with PF tek, I'd recommend switching to a humidity chamber for fruiting. Just take some coco coir, put it in a tub, and soak it with some water. Leave the lid on upside down and put your cakes in that. A SGFC like the one you're using is much more versatile in what species you can fruit, but if you're fruiting cubes you really don't need all that FAE. Plus if you invest in coco coir now, it'll be easier to switch to tub fruiting methods in the future -- as you'll already have it.

I'm now almost 100% positive it's a genetics issue.

I think I got the misting/fanning balance perfectly on the third flush (didn't do anything radically different compared to what I was doing before, just used more water when misting and did it only twice per day) and got one big healthy mushroom the size of my index finger. The other mushrooms from this flush were still small as before but this leads me to believe that if one mushroom got that big, the conditions were correct and only genetics remain.

I am currently printing that mushroom so I can start with that on my next grow. Sadly since I'm only interested in taking and growing mushrooms once a year or so, I don't think that going into cloning or genetic isolation of other sorts will do me any good. The small mushrooms were definetly a bummer since I though I was doing something wrong with the misting and fanning, and I also wanted to see big and beautiful mushrooms after all this work, not these toothpick sized things. I hope the genetic dice will roll in my favour next time.

My first foray into mycology was 32 cakes off...i forgot how many syringes. I got all kinda phenotypes popping out. Some with thick stipes, some with hollow stipes. Some tiny and pathetic, and some downright monstrous. MultiSpore (MS) my man.

Mushrooms also tend to get much larger with each flush.

I’d say you definitely got weird genetics. The first flush picture they look healthy but really odd for cubes. Something about the color and texture of the caps.

With a syringe there are so many genes that you should get something different every time you use it, so just keep trying.

I’m personally not a fan of cakes for people starting out. Shoeboxes are much easier.  It’s way too easy to seriously damage cakes when you’re learning what good conditions are and how to maintain them.
