I haven't tried it with cubes but I'm running King Oysters that way right now. I just have a quart jar with colonized grain spawn and an aspen chip casing. Plastic baggie with holes poked into it (the bags I have don't leave a gap when I put the opening around quart jars) and it's fruiting pretty nicely.

I might have to use this tek for my first try.

MIL keeps trying to give us stuff when we stop by to declutter her house & gave us a canning pot, jars, and a dehydrator when we visited yesterday so I'm more than half way to having everything.

Just need to pick up some brf and vermiculite.

Just to clarify for my own understanding.

BRF + Verm into mason jar, sterilize (steam), inoculate, once full colonized remove lid, add a thin, moist layer of verm, and throw a bag on top?

I have had success inoculating my jars to full colonization, but did not get the correct field capacity using coco coir in a shoe box.

Thank you for your time and help everyone,

Almost. When you birth the cakes, rinse off any of the loose verm from the top, then dunk for 12-24 hrs. You can also heavily mist for a couple days in place of that.
After that, add new verm and moisten it down (coir works too) and put a baggy on top. Good to go:thumbup:

Thank you MagicConch. “Birth” = fully colonized cake ? How do you dunk them ? Water in a shoebox ?  That’s where I’m mixed up. Much appreciated

Birth means taking the colonized cake out of the jar. You can dunk them in anything that holds water and using anything that'll hold the cake under the water. You can also put it back in the jar after you rinse off the verm and put water in that and close the lid, the lid will hold it under the water enough

Hello! This is my first time trying this method. My jars just started pinning, but I'm only noticing side pins. On the top, the mycelium just seems to be spreading through a bit, but I have not seen any pins.

From reading through the thread, I understand that this must mean the surface conditions are not perfect, and I'm assuming the water that drips down has made the sides of the jar more suitable.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I check that the surface is drier, and then mist until I see it "glisten". For my room, that happens to be ~2 time / day.

The side pins are small right now, but at what point do I need to remove them?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Just following up, in case this helps future readers -

Trust the process. I didn't change much, and I'm getting a good amount of top pins now. There's more side pins as well, but I'm just ignoring them.

Misting 2-3x per day. I just check to see the surface is a "little damp", and then I mist from 1-2 ft. away.

I've never waited for the surface to be "dry", before misting. I'm not fanning either. I just put the bag back on after misting.

Question: Do I need to change much now that it's pinning? Or just continue this method all the way up to harvesting?

Interesting note: My un-dunked jars actually pinned faster (~5 days for side pins, ~7 days for top pins) / more than the dunked jar. I'm starting to see some top pins on the dunked jar now, but it's much much slower. Dunked (10+ days ago). My guess is that there was enough moisture from dunking, and my misting was actually slowing it down (I misted all the jars on the same schedule).

Thanks for this great starting out tek! Now I've got 1 jar that is currently fruiting and I'm getting those "fuzzy feet" on a couple of them. From what I've read it is from lack of FAE. So my question is would poking some holes in my baggie help? I can really only grow these in a tiny closet, so I'm wondering maybe if I just opened the window a little bit if that might help too? Thanks again (:

You could try more FAE but fuzzy feet doesn't necessarily mean you need it. A lot of mushrooms will just have mycelium towards the base regardless of if they like the conditions or not

Hi,
I have several PF tek jars on the go.
I unfortunately used jars that are not wide mouth and have a "neck" that is thinner than the jar. So I can't remove the cakes from the jar.

Is fruiting from the jar still I viable option here?
I was going to cut the cakes out and go to bulk in a shoebox. But I am a little concerned with contams, so thought I'd fruit some of them in the jars to ensure I have a supply when I try a shoebox with the next grow.

So questions:

1: as I can't remove the cakes, will poring water into the jar to "dunk" be OK?

2: should I leave these on the shelf they have been colonising on, which is a high shelf with no direct light or would they need more light?

3: would putting them in a cupboard with a 6500 bulb providing direct light 12 hours a day be a better option then indirect Sun light during autumn/fall daylight hours?

Thank you

If it were me I'd cut 'em out and put 'em in a shoebox. Just be as clean as you can -- once 100% colonized, contams are LESS of an issue. You'll end up with way more shroomies than top-fruiting.

Cheers, I've been looking up spawning brf to bulk and it seems very hit and miss whether your get a greater yield or not versus a SGFC.
This is my very first grow and I'm growing for personal use to see if this can help ease my depression. So I'm very much wanting fruit ASAP to try really. So I though the jar method might be worth doing for a few of my jars and then spawn the others to bulk when I have a small supply at hand.
I have 9 jars on the go, 1 fully colonised today, 2 more very close to full. 2 more about 2 more about halfway and the rest anyway where from a small bit upto half way.

Does this method make it take longer to see pins (compared to an SGFC)?

No.
Harvest time may be longer
