Hey bod, I got some 54q sterilite lock tites and have the lids flipped but they seem a little warped and leave quite a few larger cracked open spots along the lid. The unmodified tubs evaporate moisture quickly so misting once a day is necessary. I’m thinking of cutting out the blue weatherstripping that aligns where the latches are and setting, not latching down, the lid in its correct position. Have you tried this? Thanks

Weight of a quart jar of spawn [Re: bodhisatta]

Hello Bod and forum. Coming from Australia,we don't often use quart measurements and I was wondering if you had a gram or kilogram weight for the amount of spawn required for a 650g brick of coir.
Please let me know but I assume that so long as there is a sufficient amount of spawn the weights dont particularly matter too much.
Cheers!

A quart jar is nearly the same as a 1 liter jar.

Thank you! So say 5 x litre jars, 2/3's full of substrate should be about correct for 650g of coir?

Do you live in a more dry or more humid climate? I live in a very dry area and I've had some issues specifically with the water content in my BRF cakes when using the standard 2:1:1 mixture of verm/water/brf appearing to be too dry. I've run a few jars with ~33% more water than the ratio called for (tested a 6:4:3 verm/water/brf mixture) and they seem to be doing slightly better.
Anyway, I'm going to be moving onto your coir bucket tek and your shoebox tek to spawn these BRF cakes pretty soon. I'm wondering if I should also tweak the water level in my coir the way I did for my brf cakes. I haven't used coir yet so I don't have any frame of reference. So if you live in a dry climate then I'll happily follow your directions exactly. But I am curious what you think.

Pf cake recipe doesn't care about your humidity they colonize in a glass jar. Recipe works in death valley or the rain forest

First unmodified tub - question about time to pinset/substrate health [Re: bodhisatta]

Hi everyone, I'm relatively new to this and using Bod's unmodified tub tek.
Just wondering if I should be concerned that I don't have a pinset yet. Its been 17 days since spawning and I have consistently had some water beading on the surface. I believe I'm using Golden Teacher but as a novice I am unsure as I get my spore syringes online. I'm from Australia and temperatures have just recently started to become a little colder (particularly overnight) but day time temps around around 20-24ish degrees celcius.
After reading ComebackKid's proper surface moisture thread I am a little more at ease with my tub, but still I thought I might post in here and see what everyone thinks. As you'll see in the pictures ive added a raise to the lid to increase FAE in the hopes of generating some pins.
Cheers!

At 17 days from spawning means 8-10 days of colonization on average and 5-7 more for pins. Which means pinning should be around the corner.
Make sure there is water beading on the surface and increase fae. A good way to do this is drill 4 holes on the top corners of the tub and use screws, this way you can adjust the lid's height.
Good luck

Thanks Phony. We have pins! Only a few at this stage but hoping for a pinset to develop. Any tips on things I can be doing to increase the chances of this? Or is it now just up to the organism?

Well done man. I'd watch out for things to not dry out, make sure you have enough FAE to let the organism do its job, if you prep'd your sub @ field capacity BOD's unbodified will work great for you, if it was a bit soggy you might have to give more FAE for the first flush. Generally if your shrooms growing fast and unstumped you are good fuzzy feet and slaggers just need a bit more fae thats all shrooms need to pump out the water if it's too much
all in all, it should be pretty much auto pilot with these things dialed in

Awesome man cheers! All great advice. I definitely think I might have had my coir slightly more moist than field capacity which I think has contributed to the slower first flush. Increased FAE and I'm getting some good pins now. Hoping for the pinset to really kick in soon!
What do you mean by 'unstumped'? As a note on this my pins seem to be delevoping nicely, almost doubling in size every day.
While I have ya going on this thread, do you have any tips regarding temperature? I'm in Australia and we are moving toward winter although the days are a nice temp around 25ish. I have my tub positioned sot that it receives some nice sun during the day (inside) which seems to get it nice and humid, although the nights are dropping to around 15 degrees. Is this problematic? Should I increase the evening temp by having a heater run?
Thanks again!

Hi again everyone. Just wanted to say a big thanks for everyone for the help, this is my first ever unmoded tub and the results are unreal.
Quick question re harvesting and side pins.
Harvesting Ive been picking the larger, mor mature mushrooms off early so they dont drop spores but is it ok to leave some of the harder to get ones and just deal with the spore marks in order to best do the siphoning harvest method?
Side Pins As you can see in the photos I have some pretty hectic side pin action. I think I'm attributing this to not packing my coir tight enough. Not overly worried but when I float the substrate is there any way I can minimise side pins on the second flush?
Thanks again all for the help!

First of all, thank you kindly for sharing your wisdom. Read everything of yours I could find here.
So, yeah, I'm the knob newbie, excited to begin, but very green. Followed the PF Tek to the letter, except for sleeping thru end of dunk, rolling at 36 hours, rather than the 24.
Innoc'd in jars 4March. Dunk n Roll 26April ... ~ 8 weeks later. Still no pinning 9May .... ~ 2 weeks later.
While I was keeping the temp at 75F, had a grow light, misted twice daily, things felt dry 5May. So soaked Perlite good, turned off heat, temp went to 65F, removed light, window light remained, and misted cakes heavily. Been on this heavy mist regime for 3 days now. Everything looks fine still, but no sign of pinning. Replaced grow light, and room temp now at 70F.
Thoughts of the Trusted Cultivator?
FYI, as soon as I get some kind of Bitcoin type account, you are first on the list of folks that I owe a "beer".

Your fine leaving shrooms on for a little. To help with side pins you can use a liner so it will stick to the side of the sub and not create a micro climate.
Combover. What variety.

Congrats. Pe takes along time to pin so it’s understandable that’s how long it took.
