The feral poppies seem to be related a lack of landscaping upkeep during the pandemic. Idk where the seeds come from, but apparently sometimes poppy seeds are added to pastries and other baked goods without cooking them. Also seeds from the previous year being spread around. There’s usually the occasional poppy in the museum landscaping. Last year there were poppies growing in an office building parking lot during the early shutdowns. By the time they got around to weeding, there were flowering poppies growing out of the cracks in the pavement.

That's crazy that they are naturalizing like that, poppies are very prolific seeders so if no action is taken they will certainly continue to spread. There is only one person I know around here that grows them, she is an old lady that uses the latex to treat her chronic back pain. Just grows them in the garden with other flowers as it's not technically a crime until you harvest the opium

No, I totally get the grafting of trees including the unknown factor of which exact species they used in that tree group.

& as far as location, temp. etc. BELIEVE ME I am well aware of that.  I'm 2 weeks behind EVERYONE!!!  Your NOVA, well I'm in the valley just a little SW of you.  When the rest of VA has harvested their 1st flush - I'm lucky to find a pin or 2 if I can find that.

Lucky Ive made some good buddies here.  Last year they invited me to hunt with them & not only did I have a good harvest but had a GREAT TIME!

So how far north have the voids made it so far? Are we into Virginia yet or???? This year is crazy. Spring began overnight. We started April 14th last year which was early and if the weather keeps as it is I think we will be close to that again this year. The spring flowers are blooming. The soil Temps are above 50. The trees are starting to get some color as they begin to grow their leaves. I live the tracking as much as the hunting.

Edit* i think the ticks must like to hang around on the tops of some the longer shoots. This is the third time i've found one on my neck walking through here. Also found a pile of some animal's guts with no other noticeable remains

ya they hang out on grass especially along game trails u will get covered.. ie the easier places to walk are the worst lol.

the gut pile sounds like a hunter. u take the guts out before hauling off the animal to process  funny its still there from the fall tho?? probably is a poucher if your hunting laws are similar to majority of north america.

Wonder if there aren't a bunch of guerrilla growers who have gotten into them in the last couple decades. I could imagine commercial mulch operations, given the communities they are found in, aren't just spreading Ovoids...

I have looked and looked at this flood lands spot every year for three years and still no ovoid. It seems to perfect. Right trees and habitat next to a river.

I guess they’re just not there...

First thing that strikes me about that picture is the lack of any large mature trees. Where are the 100 ft tall tulip trees and sycamores? Where’s the debris? That spot looks too pristine. You want areas where there are piles of branches and sticks around nearly every tree. Completely flat flood plains suck IMO. You want undulations where moving water has dug out ruts and piled up mounds of sandy sediment. Areas where there are lots of micro ecosystems next to each other. Debris piles. Sandy beaches. Temporary swamps. Multiple tiers of elevation.

It has many large areas of debris but is pretty flat. There are lots of areas where water collects and puddles. Almost every tree has a small or large collection of debris.

But I really appreciate the advice. I didn’t know I needed sycamores and tulip poplars. I’ll look some where else the next time I get the chance.

I’ll probably just stick to P. weilii. There so easy for me to find in North GA where I live.

Will they have more than one big flush normally in mulch spots? The 5th pic is literally a wall of ovoids fruiting on an incline most of which are rotted now.

Yeah different parts of a mulch patch will fruit at different times.

First time Ovoid hunter here. I currently live about midway between Pittsburgh and Erie, PA along the Allegheny River with lots of woods and state game lands around me. Have had a lot of rain the last couple weeks so hoping they are out there. Now to develop my eye for them. Been thru this whole thread, thanks for all the pics. It does help to see the kind of habitat they are growing near. I’m a former Floridian and lived next to a huge cattle farm so finding cubes has never been much of a hunt until now. Weather tomorrow is looking to hit 60s so if nothing else will be a good day for a walk in the woods. Luckily the woods are at my back door and the river is at my front door, so I don’t have to go far to start looking. Wish me luck!
