Recently started fishing again and I feel like others know something I don't...

This is with bait..
Okay so I just recently started again, and the spots I go, almost everyone is just throwing their line out, tightening the line, and then putting the rod down. I've never seen a single one of them catch anything but it's really starting to make me wonder why they're doing it.
If my line is in the water, my rod is in my hands. In fact it's not even just sitting there, I'm popping it around and trying to attract attention.
So is there some technique I'm missing here? Is there a reason so many people are done it. It's all bank fishing and with bait.

They are probably fishing for catfish or some other fish that feeds on or near the bottom.

All I do is bottom fish with bait, I've never had luck with lures.
But I never put my pole down. Hell if I'm 2 seconds off, all that happens is my bait is gone which is what I don't get. In my experience the time it takes from seeing something is at your line to the takes it pick up the rod to try and set the hook, the bait and fish are gone on
I tried googling it and got nowhere, I feel like I'm missing something or most people aren't really fishing. The latter I have the most trouble accepting. Really seems like I'm missing some fundamental technique.
The only reason I don't just do what I see being done is that I keep catching stuff, vast majority way to small, but I'll be fishing beside these people for hours and pulling something in every 10 minutes and they won't have anything the whole time. But then maybe they know something I don't. Cuz I'd rather catch one but fish than 20 I have to throw back.
I dunno. Just what is the point in throwing out a line and putting the pole down. Does that really catch fish? Cuz I've yet to see it so far. When I go fishing I'm not there just to sit. I'm trying to catch shit. Maybe to then that's not really the goal, but for me it is. If I'm not getting bites and not catching anything, I feel like I'm wasting my time.

You certainly can catch fish that way. That's why rod holders and circle hooks are a thing. It's the same way with limb lines and bank lines too.
I fish using two or three rods all the time and take home fish. I don't ever hold my rods when doing so.

Some of us fish with as many rods as are legal in that state; which is two in Illinois, three in Wisconsin, and four in Tennessee, but only one in Minnesota.
A still rod is fine for many species like catfish or walleyes. It also works for more aggressive biters but the hook can end up way down their throat, so not good for catch and release.

They're probably using circle hooks and a tougher bait that is harder for the smaller fish to pick at.
It works pretty well, that's how the commercial longline boats do it.
If you want to try it just make sure your bait is a bit smaller so the fish can easily swallow it whole, and that most of the hook is exposed so it can turn in the fish's mouth and hook the jaw.

Every single time I've ever had luck fishing, it's been with minnows as bait. Even as a kid I feel like I could fish for 45 - 60 mins, and usually have at least one bite in that period. When I've strayed from that as an adult, I've noticed fishing has been as you describe it OP, lol.
It's great meditation, though!

I grew up mainly bass fishing, so never really bottom fishing until I started doing more inshore saltwater and even then it was still with lures. Crickets and worms on a cork for bream but my adhd got the best of me trying to bottom fish. Pick up an ultralight with a beetle spin, cast that around while your bottom rod sits there. Y’all have rod restrictions up north?!? I usually keep a minimum 4-5 rod n reels so I don’t have to change lures. Couple worm rods, couple crankbait rods....that would take up so much time being restricted to number of rods.

I’m headed down to Lake okeechobee next month for a few days to do some fishing. Oscars for the first day then we’re going after peacock and largemouth bass....should be a great time. I got a buddy that goes down there every year and legit caught 1500 Oscar in 3 days! They got folks that clean the fish for you, like .25 a fish but I’d be willing to pay $1 a fish at that amount!

I'm okay. I'm here and there but I really don't have the time to be involved like I used to be. I work my ass off everyday, and I get maybe an hour or two to myself to just relax a day. Things have been even more crazy the last month.
On a side note,I actually went fishing today and me and one of the people I see out there all the time started talking and I actually asked him about why he does what I asked about in the op. He's using huge circle hooks and targeting really big cats and gar. He catches maybe one a month. I catch baby fish all day, not what I want, but I try to catch whatever bites at my rod. He asked if he could have one of my small cats and then cut it in half and put one half on each rod.. that's when I asked him what he's hoping to do with it. He said the fish he goes for swallow the whole hook and hook themselves. So that's why he just let's it sit there.

I can see a still rod working for catfish but I've found walleye hit so lightly that they take the bait if you're not holding and hooking. I don't do much fishing (want to change that) and most of my fishing has been on ice or lakes that don't see more than a handful of people every decade, so fishing there isn't very sporting.

So today I saw in action what leaving your rod sitting does..
Dude finally got a bite, it ripped the PVC rod holder out of the ground and started pulling the rod into the water with it. Wasn't a hard hit, it was slow as hell. I told him something is on his line cuz it started bending down, he said probably just a turtle, and it didn't stop bending. For like 20 seconds we watched it just bend further and further until it fell completely, and he yelled that's not a turtle and he's an old guy, tried to grab the rod and fell, I'm a fisherman at heart, like I really love it so instinct just kinda took over so I chased it waist deep into the water and grabbed it. I wanted to see what was on the other end. It had to be fucking big because it wasn't running with it, it was just calmly swimming away and did this. It was probably a really big gar.
He had it until like halfway in. Then it got off, or wasn't hooked and let go. 10 minutes later the other rod started doing the same except he didn't make the same mistake so I didn't have to chase it into the water. It let go/got off again though.. never came back after that.
I've seen some pretty big fish and what they do to rods.. never seen no shit like this though. It's the calmness with how it happened that's really tripping me out about it. It had to be a massive fish to do what I saw. He doesn't use a tiny or shallow set pvc... And I felt it at the other end when I finally grabbed the rod. I had to drag it back to shore and hand it to him cuz I was struggling.

I caught two big (well much bigger than I have been catching) fish on rods I wasn't holding today. Both 14 inch blue catfish. I was bobber fishing with shad on one rod that I wasn't really expecting to catch anything on but it was unused rod so why not. I saw the bobber go under and grabbed the rod to set the hook and did and fought with it a little to get it in. My main rod I've been using dip bait on sponge hooks, I sat it down to check the other rod and saw something go after it so grabbed that rod and set the hook. Two biggest fish I caught today too..
I still feel like I'm going to miss the good ones if I don't have the rod in my hand but it would appear you can catch fish without holding it the whole time.
Good day for me.
I've gone fishing every weekend for the past few months. At first I was a little rusty and didn't have the best luck but now that I'm back in it, I'm honestly doing better every week than I ever did throughout my whole childhood. At one spot I go to, I can catch 20-30 a day. I basically won't keep them unless they're big enough to filet and most aren't, but when I was a kid I was doing good to catch just one or two a day. And I can probably count on my fingers how many my grandpa let me take home to cook.

Lots of huge fish get caught using rod holders every year, fish that easily eat the ones in your picture. Check out River Certified on youtube. He catches lots of fish from channel cat to giant flatheads using multiple rods, all in holders. This is how the majority of people catch catfish.

Well I know they're out there, even in my spot. The fish that pulled the rod into the water last week wasn't even doing anything but calmly swimming away. It pulled a 2 1/2inch or so PVC out of the ground. We watched it happen over a period of 30 seconds or so. From "it's probably a turtle" to me chasing the rod into the water because neither of us were even remotely suspecting it. And this a dude who exclusively fishes for huge fish. He catches his bait with worms.
The thing is, I do try to fish for the huge ones, but if I'm not catching stuff at all, I find it really hard to stay out there. Saturday and Sunday used to be the days I'd sleep late (I get up at 430 for work during the week) but now I spend most the day fishing. If I'm giving up my ability to sleep late, I need to be regularly catching shit to justify it.
When I made this post I hadn't really seen it ever work. They seem to be there all day and never get anything, at all not even a good bite. I saw people do it when I was a kid too,I never saw it work but I wasn't getting to go as much as I do now either.
Since I made this post, I've seen it work. I've seen someone almost catch an absolute monster, twice, and I've personally now caught two big enough to filet.
When I go to my usual spot, where I know there are gar and flatheads, I now toss out a line with a bluegill or something like that and put it in a rod holder, because I know eventually, I'm gonna get that monster too. Most of the time it sits out there all day with nothing, but one day.. I'm gonna fight for a half hour to bring it in.

That sucks. All the states I've fished you also can't leave rods unattended, but you can certainly troll fish or passive fish on the shore with rods in holders.

I've fished in about eight states and Minnesota was the only one with a one rod limit.
Regulations about not leaving a rod unattended, and not having the rod in your hand, are two different things.

Well I've moved on to fishing multiple rods and most of the time I'm not holding any of them. I use kahle hooks now, they can set themselves pretty well. I've had pretty good results. I'm mostly only after big fish now though. But even small trout and Croakers I use as cut bait hook themselves.
Not the way I grew up fishing but I'm having pretty good results. I got this last week at the jetty in Freeport. I caught a 3 foot+ wide sting ray the week before that. Never ate stingray before but if I get the chance to stock my freezer with it, I'm going to.

I was targeting sturgeon in April on the Columbia and Willamette rivers in Portland. I spent about 4 days going to different spots and trying different baits an techniques, always fishing from a packraft and never the shore. I was using a medium weight ugly stick about 6 foot long with a Penn squall reel and 65lb braid, well suited fo large fish! Leader was 60lb fluorocarbon on an egg swivel weight and circle hooks..
I tried several store bought baits with no luck. I'm not discouraged thou. I think what I need to do is catching my own live bait with a cast net. Fish tend to be more interested in live bait rather than dead, frozen bait. When I get the chance, im going to try fishing closer to the boneville dam or towards Astoria. I know it might be suicide try to catch a sturgeon in a one man packraft, but I gotta try. Trying to be like my hero Jeremy Wade.
