Re: Calocybe gambosa (St. George's mushroom) [Re: hungrygoldfish]

I also found loads of these yesterday, in 3 patches. Can't see any in spots where they cropped up the last two years, but my friend says his lawn is fruiting St. George's again. The first lot yesterday was while I was viewing a house and checked underneath some laurel - it was quite exciting as apart from morels these are the only thing I have really been looking out for. The owners said I could have them and that it was the oddest viewing they have had. The bedrooms were on the small side.

The second and third patches were along local footpaths. They seem to grow in a thin layer of leaf litter, mostly well hidden. Once you spot a couple, dislodging the top litter uncovers loads more. I haven't tried these yet but I will eat some shortly, and hopefully work out how to cultivate them. Others have tried but left no literature in their wake, that I could find.

I'm glad you found them as I know that you were looking last year, I was going to suggest that you could come searching down here with me if you didn't find any.

There does seem to be another mushroom hunter here who raided my patch  but I found a patch on my way to work the other day about 2 minutes from my house.

So far I've managed to find three different types of morel, all in the same habitat as the Calocybe gambosa.

So you're looking for a new house and they have Calocybe gambosa growing there??? How much is the rent? I'd love a house with them growing.

I'm still planning on making my guide how to find them, it's sunny today after about 5 days of rain so should be fun.

I'm crap at cultivating but if I could cultivate any mushroom it would be these.

When you get around to trying them sauté them in garlic and butter, they are quite meaty...enjoy!

I think I had a big patch across the road from where I lived last year and ignored them because I didn't know what they were. Do they continue to fruit until fall? Here is a pic of what I found last year, any guesses?

Could this be Calocybe Gambosa?

No, in my experience they have a pretty narrow fruiting window from early april to mid may, I have never seen them in autumn.
If you're in NY it's highly unlikely that it's C. gambosa, it's an exclusively European species. I guess it could be an Entoloma or Calocybe species, but it's very difficult to tell from that picture..

Hmm, I don't know how much credit these guys have, but the New York Mycological Society has Calocybe gambosa listed. Introduced maybe? The mushrooms I found were in large fairy rings right off the road, just in the treeline. Considering the short fruiting window you mentioned I doubt it's Calocybe gambosa though. Thanks for the input!!

Interesting, could you post more pictures of them when they have grown more?

Here's some from my recent trip out (Some of them look a bit deformed ):

I saw some gigantic ones today but didn't have a memory card in my camera with me...will post tomorrow...

I moved over an hour away, but I might make a trip down there to grab the abundant Porcicni that grows there. If I do I will post a pic.

They started fruiting last year in August I think. It's wild how similar they look. They had VERY hard flesh, took forever to grow, and the stems were so fat, they reminded me of Porcini. I expected them to be a bolet so I was quite surprised when I turned the cap over and found tightly packed gills.

That reminds me a lot of Leucopaxilus... Anyway, I'm certain they were not C. gambosa, wrong season, wrong continent. But it would be very interesting to find out exactly what they are!

Found some today, which were mostly slug-eaten, but I'll suffer that. lol.

They usually grow in clusters so where you find one you find more. I haven't been out for a bit looking as I've been busy but on my way home from work yesterday I saw some gigantic rings with some very big ones in so I'm going out picking today.

Yesterday though I also saw an army of slugs, I wonder if they left anything

For some reason I've woken up at 05:00am and can't get back to sleep

The rain has finally stopped though!

Bonjour à vous aussi. C'est la partie du forum qui se concentre principalement sur la chasse et l'identification des champignons. Pour une meilleure réponse à votre question, visitez:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/postlist.php/Board/13

Bienvenue !
