    #2723238 - 05/24/04 02:22 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

when doing a print, which is better, an index card that is fairly thick, or a piece of folded up tinfoil? and why? ... just wonderin...

foil is better. index card is paper and seems like it could draw moisture=contams. Plus theres bleach in the paper and probably other chemicals. Foil is what my turtle uses and works just fine. If it aint broke, don't fix it.

glass slides are the way top go u get every last spore off them sukkers with a razor blade.
tin foil for me is a lil hard to get the whole print off and if the tinfoil wrinkles your screwed.then again im not a delicate when i try this stuff i just scrape everything off and i end up ripping the tin foil and i get pissed lol
index cards never tried

You can use the extra heavy duty tin foil instead, its really thick stuff, you have to try really hard to tear it up.

I prefer it (when not printing in jars) because I can put a sheet on the stove for a few seconds and it will be completely sterile and ready to use right away.

yeah, i think glass would work best, but the foil should work out wrell, too, try using a marker to flatten out the foil so they dont stick. i use that for my Research CHemicals, and i cant imagine spores that stick to stuff more than 2c-i...

I use foil, just because I think it is a neater presentation and it is protected more(by folding into itself)and its easier to get a cleaner syringe(no scraping paper pulp into your syringe).

Plastic petri's don't work too well because of the static electricity that causes the spores stick to the plate.

Glass is better.

WAX PAPER...

Sorry I yelled that, but I can't believe nobody's said it. You can wipe it down with alcohol... fold it like foil. It is thick... worst case, you get some wax with your spores... but the spores pop right off! And, like glass, you can see through it. Great for trades.

I agree glass slides are best.
Plastic sucks as static makes the spores stick.
Paper sucks as the porous surface is hard to get spores off (especially with light prints).
Foil is good because it is cheap, easy to sterilize, and spores scrape off with ease. Glass does not work well for trades as the slides can get broken in the mail if not propely protected (I got one like that). If making prints for trades, foil is probably the best way to go IMO.

Heavy duty tinfoil is the only kind to buy. Stay away from that cheap crap you can poke a hole through kust by looking at it too hard...

Has anyone tried the non-stick foil, I think it's called Release. I've made a print on it but have not tried to scrap the spores off it yet but it seems like it should work good.

Seriously?

You could print a mushroom on those, but I really don't see any advantages. Do you not own foil or something?
