There’s a raccoon living in my attic * 1
    #27258370 - 03/18/21 05:58 AM (1 month, 18 days ago)

I kept hearing noises so I went up and looked and there’s a fucking raccoon tearing up the insulation. I thought for sure it would panic and run out whatever hole it found to get in but instead it was curious about me and got within a few feet. I yelled and stomped and it just kinda looked at me like it knew that it was safe from me being able to get to it. I threw tennis balls at it and it jumped back then started playing with the balls. It’s still up there.

I’m itchy now from the fiber glass insulation. The raccoon is using it to make a bed. I don’t know how it can deal with it

A few weeks ago something dug up holes in the front yard. Big holes six inches deep. Tore up the grass. I smoothed it all out and planted grass seed. The next day I noticed lots of little holes in the same places where the animal had dug. They are the pilot holes for the periodical cicadas that are emerging in a month or so. Yesterday the same area was torn up again. This raccoon is digging out cicada nymphs 🤦‍♂️

You are going to have to trap it before it makes babies. They are extremely smart and capable animals. They can also be vicous, I would avoid contact even though it maybe cute and curious. An exterminator should be able to do this or you might be able to find a person to do it for the fur. Note it is usually illegal to relocate wildlife.

It is possible that it is also digging the lawn buy more likely a skunk or possum.

Next time you have a dark night (and after your guest is gone) plug the brightest light you have in up in the attic and go outside, after your eyes adjust to the dark you should be able to clearly see light coming through gaps. You can put tape to mark the gaps and come back and fill them later. They make a minimally expanding foam that has a bitterant to prevent animals from eating it. The foam cans are really single use, so you will want to get set up and hit all the gaps at once. Gaps you may not want to use foam on can be stuffed with pieces of stainless steel or copper chor boys.

I suppose if you want to pull an all nighter :tweak: you could wait for it to leave at night and try to fill the gaps before it returns. A motion camera will help with this, they usually come out as soon as it gets dark to go search for food and friends.

A few years ago I had a raccoon discover my cat door and come live in my basement. During the day he just liked to sleep on a garbage bag full of insulation and at night he'd go out. He immediately figured out the kitty litter and only ever pooped in the cat box. He was a really nice low-maintenance roommate and I took to leaving out water and cat food in his little corner. Eventually he stopped coming around. I like to imagine he found a nice girl raccoon and moved into her place to start a family and they're living happily ever after. I know it's dumb to let a wild animal live in your house like that but he was very polite and I have no regrets.

Just get a live trap, they're like a big cage and you can usually find them for around $40 or so, maybe more. Raccoons are smart but they're greedy too, just put a little peanut butter on the trigger plate and you'll have a new cage-pet.

Just please don't forget to check it daily!

I've had to deal with this before and it's no fun.  There's a chance that by going up there it will find somewhere else even though it didn't seem afraid.  They hate light and noise so get some lights on up there.  I've seen them move out the same night I put a light near the "nest".
It may be a momma or soon will be so she's looking for a quite, dark place that isn't disturbed

Good luck man, there's no super easy way to deal with that

Its likely tunneling thru your walls as we speak. Either kill it or make friends with it b4 it undermines ur framing. Coon collapses are very common out in some the more rural areas.

Make peace with the coon, invite it downstairs into your living room to share your home. Or else, call a humane pest removal company ASAP. The insulation can’t be good for it

They will fuck up your roof too and that will either cost a lot of money or a shitload of hard work.

Like I said, and sorry for y’all being sentimental about the animal, but the best thing to do is to kill it ASAP. imo

Also like I said, I’d just shoot it

One time I heard a lot of commotion in my backyard and couldn't tell what was happening. I heard it just as I was going to sleep and it kind of freaked me out so I went to grab the flashlight. When I shined it in my backyard there was a group of at least 10 raccoons standing in a circle and in the middle of the circle they were all watching 2 raccoons doing sexxxy time! These were some Florida meth head freaking sex raccoons or maybe they were just showing the others how to make babies?

Be careful Koods. If this happens to you then you won't be getting sleep anytime soon!

Also be grateful that they are not trash eating opossums because those are some nasty beasts for sure.

I found the hole I suspect the raccoon is using. Went into the attic to make sure it wasn’t up there and then cut a board to block the entrance. I’m literally two steps up the ladder and the fucking raccoon appears above me, curls itself over the edge of the roof and goes right into the hole. I threw the wood at it. Nails. Yelled. It just went in like I didn’t exist. So now I gotta wait for it to leave again.

If I had been up at the top of the ladder I would have been face to face with it and probably ended up falling 30 feet. The hole is literally the highest point of the roof and it’s three stories above the ground

I might try to lure it down the steps to the attic with food and get it out the door and then quickly seal the hole, although this guy is no fool

Raccoons are fearless, smart, and relentless.

I don’t think you should feed it even as a trick.

I guess if you don’t have a gun you don’t have a gun or if you live somewhere with neighbors right across a wall. Shooting it is so simple. Even if you end up with a hole and a mess that thing is a serious problem alive

Are you not an animist? Can you not speak raccoon?

Do you think it's possessed or just a lost racoon looking for a new forest home?

Are you going to hurt it? Just tell that fucker to go away. Throw sometime up there that will make it think twice about coming back.

Also- please do not climb up on the ladder without someone down below to support it.

I would shoot it. Maybe trap and relocate, but people fine you if they see that around here.
If in a town where gunfire is frowned upon, maybe poison?

The humane thing is the seal deal, but you're going to be doing this anyways.

GL. I once had a squirrel chew it's way in, and destroy my home. It freaked out when it couldn't escape and spent the whole day destroying and chewing my new windows. It made me very sad.

Have a friend come over and stay sober to hold the ladder while you get drunk, getting drunk will eliminate any fear you would have had,put cushions all around the ladder, then you can just grab the fucker and throw it outside with your bare hands. Its fool proof :awehigh:

I hope you own this house OP because i would not be risking breaking my neck on a ladder for someone else's property. I had a squirrel in my attic, bought poison that was supposed to make him run outside after he ate it looking for water. The running sounds of claws stopped and I thought it was dealt with but a few months later the death smell seeped thru and the moldy puss filled squirrel body had to be removed. Lucky i flipped a coin with my brother and he did the dirty deed, worst smell ever

But one time I used it....

I was camping out and the mice were starting to come and live in my car.

The night before I had seen three huge elk and a bobcat and I was on a ritual so when I finally fell asleep I kept hearing a sound like a mice ticking.

Come to find out- the posion that I was NOT going to use had trapped this mice and it kept me up all night and that night the shadows of the river descended upon me.

When the morning came I was entirely broken and I went to check what it was- since as before I was in the tent shaking and shiverin and afraid for my life- no axe gave me comfort.

I found out it was a mice trap at the back of the THIRD TOP SHELF on my table outside and the entire night I was listening to a dying mouse of dehydration and poison trying to escape

It was terrible. I didn't care that I myself was broken I felt so much shame for leaving that poison out - even though I thought it was unreachable.

Its imprinted on you now as it's mother when you threw that trash junk at it. even if you relocated it like 1000 miles it would use earths magnetic field to find its way back to your attic. Your pretty much stuck with this thing and any eggs it might have laid in there already. Just gonna have to raise them up like one your own

Have you ever contemplated the fact that if all the raccoons in San Francisco teamed up they could probably release a very wholesome and free app about where to find a safe place to sleep or how to find free food some yuppie was going to throw to waste. Have you ever dreamed of a world where raccoons are your friends and sometimes you match them on tinder and its unusual but i mean, its 2029  - live your life.  Who knows what is around the corner for us. My new boyfriend who works for Google developed an app that helps people find nice places to live that are affordable with fixed rent and also it doubles as a way of people helping get rid of their left overs.  He works really hard, his tiny hands are black from mashing iphone screens all day whilst yelling in mandarin.  Tonight we had left over papajohns somebody didnt want.  He asked me to marry him.  I said yes.

Replaced the vent screen while the raccoon was out getting smokes or whatever they do. He’s gonna have a rude surprise when he learns he’s been evicted.

There’s a shed with an attic that is open to the outside he can live there if he wants

I’m betting on the coon making a re-entry.

Good luck though. Hope it works. If it does glad you didn’t have to kill it but now I gotta do what I gotta do...kill two

You should bake yourself a nice humble pie so you'll have something to eat when he gets through that screen. They're born with bandit masks for a reason. The critter dose seems to have a pretty nice sense of humor though, so I think you should play this out for while. I wouldn't call a professional until you're absolutely sure that you need a psychiatrist to help you get through this.

Look into milky spore fungus. The granules work well. Takes a couple of years but once your lawn is inoculated the grubs go and so do the pests.

Grubbex works but seems likely to be part of the chemicals impacting the bee population so I recommend against using it. :themoreyouknow:

Yeah idk but cicada feed off tree roots while underground. The pics you posted look like root free lawn which sounds like grubs. Have you attempted to dig em up yourself to verify that it is cicadas?

I'm guessing your yard diggers are foxes. The foxes get scared by the coyotes and the raccoons get scarred by the foxes.

This might be a way to get it out of your attic without having to trap or kill it (and in my state, if you are going to release it, you aren't allowed to transport wildlife over natural bodies of water so you still have to find a place that won't inconvenience others but in the wild somewhere, not always easy).  So, go to a party store (or Amazon) and buy
2 strobe lights and 2 timers.  Place them at opposite ends of the attic and set the timers to go off at opposite intervals. The strobe should disturb them enough to look elsewhere for a nest.  If you have a bigger attic you may need more strobe lights and timers.  I have never tried it, but heard it suggested on a radio program and never forgot it. Good luck.

my dad was a fucking racoon hitman before we had dogs and theyd tear up our trash. he would trap them then submerge the trap in a rubbermaid tote full of water and throw cinderblocks on toptill they drowned to death. then he'd bag them and bring them to a predetermined dumping location. he asked me about shooting them with my .22 but we live in the suburbs with neighbors right on top of us, that woulda def led to some kinda reckless firearms charge so i wouldnt let him do that.  dude was cold as fuck about it tho.

It wasn't an a racoon - it was a "remote controlled surveillance stuffed futuristic robotic racoon"

The next time you see some critters- just know the government is even putting cameras on bugs and sending them into places- so it's not farfetched to think this was not a real racoon at all.

And now koods has SEALED OFF The lair of the intelligence agencies test robot racoon.

I'd be all like  :awesketch: right about now if I were him.

And yes- most certainly it has "bugged" his attic with remote access points for intelligence drones - they are using the robot racoons to break into a series of houses to increase the distance of the signal of the top secret drone program by placing waypoints in unsuspecting homeowners attics.

Yeah- I can see that. I really dislike people who just go out and kill animals like racoons for fun- and especially possums .

I have only seen people get attacked on video - and those things go WILD. But I've surprised a few while dumpster diving myself and got the heck scared out of me for sure!

When I found the raccoon in the attic it came up to me and wanted me to pet it. Same thing happened with a baby fox last year

About an hour ago I walked outside and there was a deer eating out of the bird feeder. I just sat down and watched it six feet away and it gave no fucks

I’ve narrowed down the hole digger to: raccoon, fox, opossum, coyote or ground hog

They likely have holes in thier brain from some type of coon parasite. Brain worms that leave ice cream scoop size lesions in the brains of mammals. Your attic is likely a hot bed of infected coon feces. Talk about a hole digger.

That’s what happened to a squirrel last year. Poor thing got so stupid it would fall out of trees.

I’ve narrowed down the hole digger to: raccoon, fox, opossum, coyote or ground hog

That's pretty cool.

The baby fox was locked inside the tennis court and couldn’t get out. I kept hearing yelping for like two hours and finally went out and the baby fox was trapped inside the fence and the mom was outside. When I walked up to the baby it started trying to climb up my leg. I opened a gate and it ran out.

There are so many foxes around here you don’t go a day without seeing them

The birds don't touch my garden within my sight- - but I bet despite my will-- they would be like predatory beings on the insects below- and they know when I am there or not- they are natures perfection of flight- deadly and yet light as a feather.

It's not that surprising.  They're pretty hardy animals...here's an old range map of the nine-banded armadillo from 95.  It's not impossible by any means.

Apparently they're common in Missouri.  That's almost as far north as koods is...

We've had armadillos for about ten years. I've seen a bunch of dead ones on the road, but hadn't seen one alive till last year some time.

Raccoon update. He has a nest in a tree now. He still likes to hang out on the roof. The cicadas started emerging tonight and he was in the backyard eating them as they marched towards a tree.

I guess the site was down when I started having more interaction with him. He usually comes down out of the tree when I’m in the yard. Sometimes he’ll come up and sniff my feet and get apple slices.
