Found getting the wide mouth 1L bell mason jars a pain but found https://www.lovejars.co.uk/shop/catalogue/preserving-jars/ball-mason-usa-jars/ is getting deliveries in April, they have 710ml in stock at the minute. Dunelm mill say they're getting the same jars in April too.

Use this my friend.

Also, I’ve been using Kilner brand jars up until now. Sets me back £70 for 20 x 1 litre jars lol..
Found a better deal, 18 jars for £40 non branded.

Clockwork, they are out of stock right now but you'll find that often.

It'll be no time before it's back in stock. This is what a lot of the UK cultivators and businesses use.

This is what I do.

In short:

1. Gather 5qt dry grains for 10qt hydrated grains

2. Rinse grains with hot water until water's clear (sometimes I skip this and not had any issues)

3. Soak in hot water for 24 hours (I've also been using shorter soak times without any issues, sometimes as little as 4 hours, some people don't soak at all but boil for 20min)

4. Rinse grains again and drain water

5. Bring a large saucepan to a boil, add grains once boiling. I use my pressure cooker as a saucepan but it doesn't cook or mix around as well when it's maxed out.

6. Boil for around 10 minutes (it takes me 15, after 10 mins scoop out a couple grains, cut them in half and see if the inside is white. If it's white inside keep boiling and checking.

7. When your timer goes off, take off heat right away and pour your grains through a siev. Give them a shake around, I find tilting the siev in certain directions helps drain better.

8. Dump each siev load onto a large surface with kitchen rolls laid over it. Spread the grains out evenly. I use a large piece of wood laid on the floor to dry, I guess you could use the floor too.

9. Dry overnight. Longer dry is better even 20hrs, solves moisture / wet grain after PC a lot of the time.

10. Load into your jars/bags and cook for the appropriate time.

In the initial rinse I put my pressure cooker in the bath and rinse my grains with my shower head which has a high pressure setting.

Haha I found these a few hours back, very good deal.

I was going to email them to ask if they're suitable for canning (I'm sure they are), but they're using Sage Pay, so I can't even order from there at the moment. Don't have the banking app on my new phone to verify payment.

They are in stock btw.

Just seen they take PayPal so I'm gonna go ahead and order that, free fucking delivery too happy days.

Do you need an app? Huh, I'll have a look in a while. Good to know they're back in. The ones you posted are wide mouths too. Even better.

I'm pretty sure if you can do preserves you can pc them. I might be wrong, it does state recycled glass so consistency might not be uniform.
I should really just start doing bags.

Not sure if everybody does, but for their payment gateway SagePay, it requires me to verify the payment with my banking app.

Just edited my post as I've seen they take PayPal too.

You're probably right dude, I'm just gonna take the chance lol.

I've had a right pain in the arse with bags recently.

G2G with jars no problems, but G2G with bags I've contaminated every single one. I've got 6 clean grain bags that have been sitting for a few weeks so it's definitely inoculation.

Ideally I'd like to inoculate with liquid culture via SHIP, but I've read conflicting things about their use with ISO alcohol. As ISO isn't steriliing its sanitizing, it's supposedly not appropriate to wipe down a SHIP and then push a needle through it.

Maybe I'll just squirt through the top. Fuck the G2G and SHIPs off

I still use a sab, so g2g for bags would be awkward but I'm liking natedawgs semi-solid LC idea. That would be much more ergonomic and I feel pouring is probably the safest way to nocc too.

Hello UKers

I've been out of growing for a while (although I do miss it more and more).  I'm moving house on March 28th and I've got this homebuilt flow hood:

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/14236778

It's been sitting in my garage for 5 years (before that it was in nice dry indoor storage) and it would need some TLC, and possibly refinishing.  If nothing else, the electric motor is probably still worth having.  I can have a closer look at it, power it up, and post updated photos.

Any interest?  I'm open to any offers.  If not, I'll probably have to break it up and put most of it in the tip/fireplace.  A new owner would have to come and collect from West Ewell (it's heavy) by March 30th.

I also have a couple of big boxes of supplies.  Just from memory, I believe there are glass and plastic petris, glass tubes, tube stands, on and on.  I'm not in a hurry to unload those now, but if there's interest I can do an inventory and arrange to post things.

Andymc

Anyone else struggle with water over here?

I moved to the Midlands 18 months ago and my agar went weird. Constant translucent growth across multiple cultures. So I played with ratios, changed the LME brand, tried grain water and nothing really worked.

The cultures are all fine, have uniform growth, really come to life on grains and fruit as well as they ever did.

So I started thinking it might be the water itself, went to asda, last weekend, to find distilled water, couldn't find any and said fuck it, I'll treat them to some Evian.

Agar went super Amber's colour, xfer jump off has been really slow and growth, is still very early, but doesn't look right at all. When it grows out a bit I'll update

FFS, I've done it, just spent £20 on amazon buying 5litres of distilled water this time.

There's still a chance it might not be the water, whilst I've played with the nutes and I'm currently experimenting with water sources I have yet to try changing my agar brand, although its been the same for years without issue.

Hi guys - on a different topic due to different life circumstances I'm going to be emigrating from the UK permanently within the next few months and I can't (or won't) take most of the myco supplies with me, so there are a few that I'm willing to give away soon-ish (I don't have a massive stockpile - I could take a few quid or a box of good IPAs but that is not mandatory - just happy that these supplies would be put to good use; otherwise they might end up in a skip).

I can't be fucked with parcels (not worth the shipping for the cost of goods) so it would require collection in person only (The North).

Not planning to do it right now (lockdown etc) but perhaps there is someone that would be interested. The big items would be 10-15 quart jars with SFDs already glued on, ~300 sealed plastic petris (stacks of 20), large bag of perlite, some good quality coir and other good bits and pieces, perhaps could even give my still air box away.

Hi all, the time has come for me to park this hobby so this is what I'm offering. My finger in the wind estimate is that this lot is worth probably between 200-300 quid - ideally I would like some cash for it (I'm not expecting nowhere near the actual value of the goods) but 12 bottles of some good ales/IPAs is the lowest offer I will accept. I just want this all not ending in a skip and be put to good use - which it will if I can't get rid of this soon.

Essentially this package has everything except for pressure cooker and media bottle to do a grow from a scratch :

The big items in this lot are :  more than half a bag of Dove's rye grain, 300+ sealed sterile plastic petris, 1 whole bag of wood chips, some bags or perlite and vermiculite, 20kg (or something like that) of still sealed coir blocks, SAB and a box of random useful mycology knick-knacks  (e.g. shitloads of parafilm, light malt powder, inoculation tools, gypsum, sterile swabs, agar, silicone, some sterile work kit etc). I'll throw in some extras that are not in pics that currently are sitting in the fridge.

It will be about 20 or so jars like this - half of them with wide mouth and narrow one. SFDs have already been attached using heat resistant silicone.

This is a package deal type of situation - taker collects all or nothing, and I would prefer it go to someone who will put it to good use and has some basic experience.  Collection as mentioned before is from the North of England (w yorks) - pickup available as soon as possible.

Bump for my offer above - surprisingly I've had 0 interest or messages about this lot. I'm kind of surprised.

It’s just because it’s collection dude, if you offered delivery it’d be gone already for sure.

Haha - so not just giving away free stuff but also include delivery from my side. In that case bin is a cheaper and easier option for me :frown:

I got a few weeks to hold onto this before I have to throw it all out, would be a great pity.

It's too much (or too many pieces, including fragile glass jars) to really ship it (as I want it to be gone in one fell swoop). Life is very busy right now, I can't be fucked with spending a day or more trying to get this packaged properly and shipped.

I was hopeful that there will be more of an interest for essentially free shit as people in this thread regularly complain about lack of good jars and other equipment availability in the Old Blighty. I might have been wrong.
