Tax question
    #27253457 - 03/15/21 06:42 AM (2 years, 10 months ago)

If I mail in the 1040, am I required to include attachments for tiny amounts. My printer is broken so I went to the library to print documents. I was able to access the statement for a several hundred dollar deduction for a health savings account. But for some reason related to being on a different computer, I could not bring up the one saying I made 99 cents on an internet savings account, or the one saying I had 8 dollars in short term capital gains. Can I send in the return without these. Someone told me they aren't necessary for small amounts, as long as the return is accurate.

I don't think I've ever included original documentation on my IRS returns.  All of the numbers are entered on the correct parts of the return and if the numbers that were reported to the IRS by outside companies/banks/brokers don't reconcile with the aggregates I provide on my return, I'll get a nice love letter from the IRS indicating the discrepancy (if it's in their favor) including any additional amount (+ penalty and interest) that may be owed.

Capital gains are typically reported on Form 8949.  Interest is reported on the 1st page of Form 1040.  You shouldn't need to provide additional documents beyond including the amounts in the appropriate boxes on their respective forms, unless explicitly requested.

Thank you. I'll have to go print an 8949.
