Tyvek Q's.. opinion?
    #2724854 - 05/24/04 11:04 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Hey all, quick questions:

When using tyvek, should I put the tyvek on top of or underneath the lid? And if it's underneath (a la 6T's WBS tek), is it ok not to tape it?

My biggest concern, and real question, is whether or not taping innoculation holes in tyvek is a neccessity. Thanks in advance for any input.

I put tyvek on top of the metal lid and under the band. I poke two small holes in the metal lid and inject through one and tape it. Always worked well for me, but I've also heard of people putting the tyvek under the lid and putting coffee filters over the top post innoculation. I suppose its mostly a matter of preference.

I put the tyvek over the mouth of the jar, place on disc with one hole 3/16th's of an inch dia.,filled tightly with polyfill and then put on outer ring, tighten it down. When I innoculate,I inject through the polyfill, through the tyvek, into the jar.remove syringe and place 2 coffee filters over lids and secure with a rubber band.
You can use a bandaid,or you can use medical tape(mesh).
You just don't want contams getting in through the hole you made when you stuck that syringe in there,so cover it up,but let it breath.

Yep, that's the point. It allows gas exchange but stops most contaminants.

if you did the PF method would you still use the tyvek? i'm about to start doing the bird seed method instead of the PF but I don't feel like dealing with this tyvek and what not. Couldn't I just do it the way i normally do?

when PCing or boiling i put the lid with the holes and some foil on top...let in PC or boil...when i'm done i take them out and let them cool foil still on. when it's time to innoculate i use a syringe and i put some in each hole, then with much precision i take the current lid off (ring and dome), put a coffee filter or 2 on top of the jar and put JUST the ring back on.

i've had TONS of success doing it like this with the PF tek..but it's time to grow in bulk and bird seed is where it's as...

would this not work with the birdseed method?

(btw...i'm new...what's up peoples)

yeah...i think the tyvek with the polyfill and the double coffee filter is good if you really want to be extra cautious...but i have a feeling that just keeping the top covered is good enough...ha

I have just tried this simple polyfil method and it is working fantastic. I innoculate over an oven and have had no probs. I haven't tried the tyvek, but I'm sure that it works well too....
