Upcoming bloodwork
    #27228461 - 02/26/21 10:38 PM (2 years, 10 months ago)

Hi, I normally use on Saturday nights.  This coming Tuesday though, I am getting bloodwork done as part of a medical checkup (nothing to do with my employer).  Do I have anything to worry about?

Do you care if the medical people know you use?

I guess what I'm asking is, one, will anything even show up after that amount of time, and two, if they do see anything, can they tell my employer or inform the authorities?

After 48 hours, THC is generally undetectable in blood. Urine is different and much longer because they test for THC metabolites, a byproduct. You never specified which substance you're concerned about though, but other substances are pretty similar when it comes to blood tests though. Opiates shouldn't be detectable after a couple days, various stimulants shouldn't be either.

Usually with blood tests you're not getting tested for any particular drug unless there is a reason to. Whether they will report it to your work depends on where you live, but in the United States that is typically private information unless your work is providing the healthcare for a work related incident or physical. You would know ahead of time whether this info was going to your employer for the most part, because you would need to sign something authorizing the release of your medical info.

1) General blood tests do not test for any drugs unless they are requested by the patient or by someone else and authorized by the patient (such as blood tests for work).

2) HIPPA, in the vast majority of the U.S.A, prevents the doctor from sharing such information. It is only shared in the event that the patient authorizes it (such as when accepting to take a blood test for employment) or there is immediate threat to someone without the disclosure of said information (which I've never heard of with bloodwork since the only real "threat" they can conclude if they found something in your blood was to you).

That's not correct. Information protected under HIPAA can be subjected to a subpoena. Additionally, a care provider can release information to law enforcement if they believe it's necessary to prevent harm, even if only the patient is at risk. Of course, the threat of harm must be serious and imminent, so I don't think a positive drug test would by itself qualify.

Still, HIPAA isn't some kind of airtight seal, and you would imo have good cause for concern at having a positive drug test on your record. For instance, even if no legal action results from it (which, honestly, it probably wouldn't), the results could still be communicated to your health insurance provider and would likely impact your premium.
