Do woodeater species exhibit better traits / more liveliness on wood water agar?
I think I am noticing very different growth for azure, serbica and luteoviridis
Regular mea agar will have weak growth, but boil some wood water agar up, and they seem to like it slot
Kinda makes me wonder if there is a specific agar nutrition to use for better semilanceata growth on agar

I reshook all five of my Batch 1 jars today, even the two with very little mycelium visible. Will report back on them at the end of the month, 3 weeks from today.

Word. Watch them and learn. One can learn an awful lot from watching shaken jars.

Can you recommend a tek for saving my #1 and #2 mycelium now growing on WBS ? In 2019, I inoculated LC jars; all failed to grow mycelium. I will make slants as soon as I get more popsicle sticks. My thoughts are either G2G or grain to agar.

If you want to slant it and don't have anything on agar, dump a grain or two out onto a fresh plate, transfer to a new plate once grown, if that plate is clean transfer to a slant.

Why do cultivation methods keep trending towards more simplification? Over the years, it seems like what people think is necessary keeps getting smaller and methods are simpler. Examples:
- Before: fan and mist the tubs, now: just get the field capacity right and don't mess with them
- Before: CVG, now: coir only
- Before: modified tubs, now: unmodified tubs and shoeboxes
- Before: gloveboxes and spraying down SABs with alcohol or lysol, now: just use soapy
- Marthas and other equipment that is no longer really used for cube cultivation
- Before: crossing strains is hard and requires snake venom and microscopes, now: there's a whole thread with people crossing them by swabbing plates
There are probably other example I'm not thinking of. Is it because cultivating other types of mushrooms is more difficult and people adapted those methods to cultivating cubes or some other reason? Also why did it take so many years to understand some of this stuff?

I think it’s mostly just because cult is still new. People would figure out a method that worked and then overtime more people experimented and figured out which pieces were necessary and whittled them down to only the essential steps.
Simple will always be better assuming the same results.
The snake venom thing blew my mind, I thought it was a joke until I saw it mentioned a few times. I think that’s mostly for species crossing though.

Yeah, makes sense. I guess I just thought that things would start simple and get more complex as necessary. But maybe that comes from adapting something usually done in lab settings to diy at home kind of stuff?

I was pretty surprised to realize nobody had tried making LI without a blender. Def a lab practice I adapted to lazy at home practice.

what's the thought on a double shake?
Shook at 30% and they've recovered nicely probably on day 7 or so after shake now but looks like another shake might help.

Shake as many times as needed whenever you think a shake could speed things up, there's no issues with that. If the colony is healthy it will bounce back without problems. Many of us shake at least 3 times on the reg.
@senseit, CV(G) is still current af. Adding verm is a matter of preference and/or availability. Many cultivators like to use it and I feel it improves the consistency of the sub and helps it retain even more water. Nobody cares for the G(ypsum) though but I do use it if I have it.
Same with modified tubs, they're still current and are considered a better option for people who need to stack the tubs, set them and forget them. Check out Pasty's ez dial tub for a current improvement on modified tubs. It does away with poly or MP tape to cover the holes and instead relies on strategically placed and much smaller holes that don't need to be taped or poly'd.

I’ve been shaking three times lately. There’s a learning curve but I’ve been shaking twice early, basically as soon as it’s jumped off and grown over a couple layers of grain and then again when it’s recovered and spread to the grains around each colonized kernel.
It maximizes the amount of grain the myc can get to and then after that I let it run for a while.

My interest in this hobby is the science and the opportunity to discover.
I've built a sealed, fully automated incubator and fruiting chamber that controls the environments while recording numerous temps outside, inside, inside the cakes, substrates, etc. It also monitors co2, co, and humidity in various locations. I've run several grows and seem to have it dialed in. I intend to take the collected data and perform a small-scale AI analysis to identify inter-relationships in the various readings, once I have a couple of years of results to study.
I've noticed a large number of posts asking when will something happen or be ready. All newcomers watch their first grow intently. Speed is definitely a common interest while you're waiting for your first flush.
I had an idea to add even more fun to this knuckle-biting hobby - a time-to-grow contest. For example, a spore vendor could sponsor the event, collect entry fees, and simultaneously ship a liquid culture of some unidentified variety of cubensis to all contestants. Contestants could use any tek, and would be required to post regular photos of their progress. The first person who submits a photo of a pile of dried mushrooms weighing 25 grams wins.
Do you think there might be interest?

Not from the vendors. They won't ship living cultures and their spores are not for growing. They wouldn't want to be associated with such a contest in any way.
