This is an Agaricus species, none of which are active, some of which are poisonous, some of which are edible. You can see this by the strong brown/black spore print the ring on the stalk and the overall shape of the mushroom which often has a straight and fairly stiff, moderately fibrous stalk.

One way of narrowing down this specimen to genus that ToxicMan would suggest is cutting the mushroom laterally in half (including the stalk), so that the flesh where the cap and stalk adjoin is revealed. Now scrape this area and after a few minutes smell it for any distinguishable smell and check for bruising of any color. Check again after half an hour because the bruising reaction may take a while. I hope your specimen is not too maggot infested! Good luck.

Wow, I don't even have to post in these threads. I come out here and you guys have already told them what I was going to and referenced me in the process. I think I'm flattered.

Magma is correct in all respects. When you scrape the inside, make sure you scrape it hard enough to bruise the flesh.

Happy mushroomign!
