Yeah the cheapo ones warp once in a while but I'm in front of the hood so I don't mind messing with them.
I got cover rye for $7 a bushel which is a $50 bag. Tiny bit dirtier than store bought bag but the 25+ dollar savings makes it worth it to me.

I'm still rockin wheat for bit less than $13 per 25kg (in CAD, so like $10 USD)
It's dusty and needs a little rinse but you just can't go wrong at this price.

Wow, really good work for first try! Beautiful growth. Try and take your transfers before the growth is so big. But those look good enough for grain.
The last plate has 2 little specks between 12-1. I can't tell if they're on the outside or not. Double check they're not satellite contams.
Also re: plastic lids warping,
I primarily used metal, but the only time I can remember plastic lids warping was when I was new and tightened them tight while they were still super hot. I don't think it's much of an issue unless you manhandle them while they're still hot and malleable.
If you tighten while hot, be super gentle and only turn until you get a tiny bit of resistance. They'll be super tight when they cool. Or wait until they're cool and tighten tight.

This was my first try with wheat too but none of the agar was taking to the grains. It’s been over a week. I don’t know what went wrong I did everything like RR said for rye. Sad day but I guess it’s time to dump all 20 of them and start over
And thanks stareatclouds I appreciate it, it’s been an interesting journey leaving cakes behind and doing agar and grains. A lot of failures along with some success it looks like

Damn, 20 of them and nothing? Something has to be seriously wrong.
- Where's the agar wedge at in there?
- Were they fully hydrated before sterilizing?
- What do your lids look like?
- Is there bacteria/mold anywhere?

Soaked for 24 hours, boiled ten minutes and left out on a window screen to dry then loaded the jars up and pc at 15 for 90 min, left them in the pc overnight and cut the wedge off and threw it in while inside my SAB. I’m like and the agar was fine, it’s what I used for all my other plates. And there’s no contamination after all this time so I’m puzzled
This is the most that they’re showing could it be gas exchange? They were noc up on the 20th of last month

That looks normal. What are you expecting?
I started mine with tiny wedges because I was dealing with some bacteria, worked five just shook when they looked like that.

Rebelutionss- Did you put a tiny wedge in or a whole plates worth of myc?
Only time ive ever had grain not grow anything was cuz i let it soak in warm water for 2 days and it developed some nastiness. I pc'd it anyway, knocked it up, and nothing. It was cuz whatever grew in it left behind some kinda toxin and myc refused to take to it.
If it's really not taking, where did you get your grain?

Just a wedge. That one in the picture is the furthest along, most are barely showing anything. I thought agar jumps really fast onto the grains. And I just got them on amazon, red winter wheat berries or whatever. Guess I’ll just have to grab some real rye and go with that.

- Replace your 24 hour soak with a quick simmer or low boil. Whatever gets your grain hydrated quickly without destroying them.
- Try and wiggle your agar wedge farther down in the jar. Against the glass (mycelium facing grain) in the middle is good. Use multiple wedges for more leap off points.
- How big is the hole in the lid?
- What is that filter?
- That jar looks good. Shake t.
- Let the myc grow out to 2/3 the plate next time. Then cut out the circle nearest the leading edge and plop the whole thing in there. Cut the next one in half and try 2 big wedges.
That jar looks good. I'd shake it.

On plastic lids, any standard store brand has been fine, but the Amazon 20packs for very cheap with no brand are the ones that has sucked for me.
Any regular brand ones have been fine and I don't think anyone doubts that. The cheap ones will COME warped before they even get to the PC, cupping so bad I threw half away.
I'd avoid the extreme cheap amazon plastic lids , but have no prob with most others. Huge difference in quality. The ones I mostly have now are a couples steps of sturdiness above the store branded ones even, they thicc.

Uline 70/450, they're $11.50 for a 50 pack.

The only plastic one I have ever used are the Ball Brand, but they suck and it took me a long time to realize this. If I would take them out of the PC to early you could hear the air sucking into the jar.
