the shoebox was a much earlier attempt, the tubs yielded much better (about 4 each, clone culture)
Unbucket tek , leveled w a concrete float, top layered about 1/3 of an inch, ez dial tubs w opaque lids
What spawn ratio did you use with the tubs?

Do you run them just like cubes? I’ve been thinking I need to play with air and moisture levels or something. I guess it’s possible I just picked shitty genes four or five times but seems unlikely.
Yep just like cubes. Ez dial tub w opaque lid and less light than i normally use (prob not relevant), unbucket tek, little less than 2 to 1 sub to spawn ratio, top layer about 1/3" deep. Stayed very wet so never misted even once. They do act a bit different tho, they do the weird overcolonization of the toplayer (or casing) kinda like Golden Halo does
Lol yeah harvesting and cleaning those dense canopies when fruitbodies are small is a bitch
Ive had pretty good luck with this culture. Whats the main issue you're runnin into with them?

Fairly high, little over 4.25lb of spawn (actual weight, not mycoquarts or myco lbs ) to a bit over 6 qt CV + 1 qt CV top layer

Do you use manure in you're sub? Ime manure based subs put out normal looking fruits. And grain based sub put out weird gnarly fruits and are also prone to overlay (they move faster though...). I just made a tray with 1 part grain spawn, 3 parts straw and 3 parts manure.

This tub is just coir but I agree, the manure tubs I’ve done had different more colorful mushrooms.
As far as we can tell NSS is a cube from natal, while natalensis is its own species. Gotta keep things nice and confusing for everybody

I don't think there is such a thing as NSS. The only ones I saw looked and behaved exactly like natalensis.

I'd be worried if it wasn't Natalensis, it happened after 100 percent colonization.

Damn that’s so weird.
That’s the thinnest natal myc I’ve ever seen on grain aside from those fingers. Is that the same culture that put out a nice tub or a new one?

This culture is from clone tissue I took awhile back and put in storage and finally getting around to getting it back out and going. This jar was made from a LC, and the only one out of the three I made with the LC doing that. The 3 jars were wheat,WBS and oats. The wheat jar is the only one doing this. I might run it by itself in a shoebox. I'm not worried about it being contaminated but wanna see if it'll act different. I try and go for Tom growth for my Natalensis.
I have put my Natalensis x APE plate to a grain master and waiting to see how that's going to turn out. I'm waiting for my APE jars to finish colonizing and I'm going to mix 1 quart of each to a 16 qt tub.

I have 3 trays going rn. 2 that are 100% coir, 1 a 1:2 grain: coir ratio and the other a 1:3. The third tray i spawned the other day is cvg but a 1:4.
I feel like I'm always experimenting with these things which is sometimes fun but also sometimes frustrating. I'm just looking for a culture that won't overlay, whether it's a genetics thing, a substrate/ratio thing or an environmental thing. Or any combination of the three

The Natalensis mycelium seemed to get stronger but for all I know it's APE mycelium. I'm waiting on my playa to grow out more before I mix those. But my playa and my Natalensis myc look about the same. Here's the nat x APE plate before it went to grain.
The lower left looks like my APE and the rest looks like my Natalensis.

Nice. Yeah, my playa looks super tomentose but not like nat at all. My nat is all fuzzy where the transferred agar sits, but fans out nice like yours
