Slow growth psilocybe cubensis, pftek

Hi everyone I started these guys 12/31/20 and the first 4 weeks, temp fluctuated between 68-78. I've got them on a consistent heat source now ranging 78-84. The mycelium is growing so slow! I noticed the most growth with the consistent heat. Should I just wait a bit longer or start over? Be kind, it's my first time ☺️ I'm using brown rice flour. No signs of contamination and some jars have extra water in them. Nothing is dry.ive also flipped them a couple times to absorb the water...which is clear, not yellow.

That’s way too long for a cake to take to colonize. What size jar is that.. a pint? If so, it’s too big. If that were a 1/2 pint, it’d have been colonized over a month ago. Do you have solid tape over the inoc holes? If so, it’s probably out of air which will stall a cake.. especially one that big. Putting it on a heat source probably dried the bottom half out. 68-78 is plenty warm enough to colonize in.
A combination of those things is probably what’s causing the stalling, if I’m guessing correctly. I guess I’ll let you respond before I make anymore assumptions and we can go from there.

Yes, a wide mouth pint. I'm using spore tape over the hole. The jars don't sit directly on a heat source. I'm using a reptile pad to heat a cooler. In the first 4 weeks, very minimal growth. Temps weren't consistent, sometimes it would dip in upper 50's. I noticed some more growth about a week ago, and some are almost completely enveloped in mycelium. But I'm with ya, seems a bit long. I wonder if it was the cold(er) start?

You should have seen some growth with in a week or two at most

Could be they’re bacterial and you don’t want to go bigger than a 1/2 pint with pf cakes because they tend to stall like this even when healthy. If they stall out completely, you can birth them and cut off the uncolonized parts and try and fruit them.
Cold temps can definitely slow growth considerably and if they’re that old, they’re probably drying out, heat source or not.. they’ll dry out out gradually at optimal temps being in a jar that long.
Up to you what you want to do of course.. if you think they’re still colonizing and want to wait, go for it. Maybe draw a line with a marker at the edge of myc and see if it moves past it in the next couple days, if not, it’s stalled

Thanks for the advice, Faht. Think I'll pull some and see if I can get any to fruit. I got some smaller jars for the next round. 🍄✌️🍄

Just a lil update. So, laughing out loud here, I realized I should have pulled the microspore tape off after my first post. I gave the babes some time to grow and now I'm getting pins! No contams, just sloowww progress!

I got my jar with grains sold per-sterilized. My jars are about 4 weeks old too and initial temperature was 66 to 70 for the 1st two week - no growth that I could see. Now about 70 to 75. The growth was even slower for me but it is consistent. At a month my colonization is about half as colonized yours on one jar and about 1/4th on the other. But it looks clean and is progressing, so I plan to leave it aside for as long as it takes. Perhaps too soon to shake it up as well. Any reason why you though you need to take out the micro spore tape out?

Update to slow growth: The growth is progressing along very well. I researched it a bit and it's seems reasonable for growth to happen over several weeks. Most everyone seem to be calling out growth happens in a week or two. It took 6 weeks to be colonized at 30-40%. Shook it up and another week to see growth all over but not thick. Shook it up again and then 3 more days before it appeared fully covered. So about 2 months in all (or could be more) for a jar to colonize. I suppose others lose track of time and declare it happened for them in a week?

No, people don't just quote random data here. Generally speaking if you have good lc or decent grain to g2g then you can have a fully colonized jar in a week.

There's nothing 'normal' about a grain jar struggling for 8 weeks or more before it finishes colonizing. Unless you post pics of your grain don't expect anyone to be able to help you diagnose the problems you're experiencing and you won't get any clear advice on how to deal with the situation (aside from groundless speculations being posted in reply for whatever reason) As far as I'm concerned your grain could be improperly hydrated or not being properly sterilised, your inoculation method might have contaminated the grain, or your culture/spores may have already been dirty from the start thus contaminating the grain upon inoculation.
The most effictive way to get your questions answered is to include as much of the (basic information) as possible regarding your grow' and be clear and consise while describing the inoculation method and type of inoculate used (LC? Agar culture? G2g? Spore solution? Describe fruiting method/setup as well as what kind of substrate you're potentially fruiting and how much/at what ratio you're spawning. And then post pics of at least one item which concerns you the most. And when all this information is posted along with a pic then most growers experienced or intermediate will be able to give you a straightforward advise on what you could do to get different results. Hope that helps GL.
