some strains [oysters in particular] like the addition of some spent [used/ brewed] coffee grounds in the substrate, old tea bags are good too. Fresh coffee or beans would be WAY too acidic.

In the past I have tried putting a bit of grounds into a brf mix, not any difference I could tell...other than the stuff made the substrate a bit darker. In GG&MM they show pix of oysters growing out of cofee grounds, but its never really mentioned in the lists of "useful" substrates. I do know that green mold will grow on coffee grounds. More than once I've forgotten to empty the coffee filter for a couple of days, in such cases there's usually a spot or two of green death starting to take off....the stuff loves an acidic food source.
