this is from memory, but I'd venture to say almost verbatim from TMC:

since fresh mushrooms are 92% water, freezing them would cause the water within to expand, breaking the cell walls of the mushroom--once thawed, the mushrooms become a shapeless mass of goo.

either dry them before freezing (but not necessary if dried) or take directly from the freezer to the teapot.
