I bought 2 boxes of 100 blades like 2 years ago. Not even half way through one box. I agree with mushboy about old blades tearing the myc. It also seems to make the wedges "grip" the blade a little more which leads to more tapping and\or scraping to make the transfer. With that said, I tend to use a blade for as long as I can. Partly because I hate waste, and partly because I changing them still scares the hell out of me after an accident while changing blades a while back. On the up side, that was the cleanest, sharpest blade I have ever cut myself with so the wound closed up in less than 12 hours.

Does anybody else “feel” the cut just thinking about slicing into a finger or hand? It’s a feeling you don’t forget! I’ve put my thumb down on a razor blade in my toolbox before, I can re-feel that more than the sawzall to the finger!

Guys lets all be safe and get some cut resistant gloves when changing scalpel blades, I mean we use gloves to protect our plates and jars right?
Also I use needle nose pliers, but I have recently phased out the scalpel and inoculation loop from my process.

I’ve pushed the blade into my finger quite a few times while putting a new blade on.
To take them off I figured out if you just bend the blade for some reason it pretty much falls right off. So much better than trying to wrench it off with forceps.

This is what I use for a majority of my agar transfers. I have successfully taken single ropey strands and transfered them to other plates. If the myc is more tomentose, I can cut small wedges out with this tool also.

Life hacks: always keep superglue and duct tape on hand. Saved me from many of stitches working with sheet metal.......and never use quick clot unless you’re absolutely going to bleed out, that shit will cause more problems on less severe injuries......tampons are great for plugging up bullet holes until you can get a better dressing on it

Yeah I use plyers now but still nervous. I'm very experienced with knives but one good accidental slice while changing a blade (and not using plyers like I knew I should) it still kinda scares me.
Jarhead I agree with all of that. I have used super glue before and always carry that and tampons in my camping pack for bad cuts and puncture wounds. On that note, I always unwrap and rewrap duct tape around a small piece of cardboard or card. Saves a lot of space in a pack or med kit.

I'm just not gonna read whatever horrific damage you've done to yourself for my own mental comfort.
I'm gonna PC like 8 or 12 bags of oats in the morning and then hit em with some Melmac LC I been neglecting. Seems clean on agar so I'm hoping for some quick results

Can someone explain to me why my pc was at 15 psi for 45 minutes and then started climbing without a change in the heat? It’s never done that before

Most likely the jars got up to temperature and stopped absorbing heat

I stopped it mid cycle because it sounds gugrly inside. I was running some experimental small jars no prep. Maybe they overflowed.

If you want to grow mycelium from a store bought button, like this:
