Yep, and it's cold and wet here. My yard never dries up until the summer. It's like a swamp out there right now! Very depressing and nasty the weather is here

I am so glad that I waited to start up my seeds, or it would have been a total waste. Normally I would have started them a couple weeks ago, but with this single digit hell we have right now,and snow, I wont be starting them until next month now.

Michael Pollan has an article where he talks about throwing seeds in the snow and getting a crop come spring. I used to buuy pounds of unwashed seed meant for tea, but them scatter them about every couple weeks until late march or so--pretty fool proof ime.

we had about 2 ft here with lows in the 20s for the past week. most of the seedlings that have reappeared from the melting snow seem to be just fine pics in a bit. started a tray indoors just in case last week

It can't be done here, snow or not. The weather is just too unpredictable. Our lows have been in the single digits and teens every night for a while, and we even got to 0 one morning. No poppies can tolerate those kinds of conditions, none!

not the plants themselves at those temps but the seeds will be ok. its always 32' F under the snow no matter how cold it is outside but i hear you on the unpredictable weather patterns. maybe you could start them later and light dep them as seedlings to get them vegged out nice and flower mid-late summer

Yeah, I tried a few times, and as soon as it got freezing, all my seedlings perished. It just can not be done here period.
If the seeds wouldn't germinate, then they would be fine until it warms up though, but mine always germinate and die.
It's no big deal, I'll start them up in a few days. We have a lot of rain and temps in the Hi 50's coming up.

You ever manage to get pics of your young'ns?
I am suuuper eager to get started on plant this year but unsure if I should start yet. Temps are trending upwards and out of freezing but we are not past last frost yet and shit is soaked with all the melt. Still... you think sprouts will be safe at 30f range?

My flower patches are officially starting to grow.
My seeds germinated relatively quickly this year. I saw most of them popping up within about 7 to 9 days, compared to last year where it took about 10 to 14 days. I'm using a mix of seeds that I harvested from my own plants last year, and the seeds that I used to grow my plants last year (which was gifted to me from a fella around here).
Mine are just now starting to push out their first sets of true leaves.
I started to thin out some of the clusters of seedlings yesterday, some of the rain we got moved the seeds close together in bunches. I'm def trying to thin them out while they are still teeny tiny seedlings, last year I lagged on it and it was a pain in the ass.
I plan on getting some "Lauren's Grape" and "Black Swan" seeds from my local grocery store later today for a small plot of those.

Bouta scrape grass off my new plot. Measured 20'x20' but I wanna make rows so I can walk through the patch, so I may scrape a second plot if the workload isn't too heavy. I have like 12lb of seed from qn online bakery supply and then I have my homegrown medley from last season.

Is it just me or does sac need to edit this thread title to "2021 poppy thread" // "official poppy growers" thread cause it seems like season has started again and it's now 2021...🌱🌱🌱🌱!!

On a side note, I just dig out my plot and planted several thousand seeds

Nice....That's a decent sized plot. And a lot of seed lol. You can probably grow a couple acres or more with that much seed lol.
My main flower patch (mostly poppies but also a mix of other flowers/plants) is about 5'X10' .

I was going to mention something like that too lol.
I mean all that matters to me is the chit chat/discussion within the thread, the title of the thread is no biggy....but yea I was going to say maybe the OP/Sac can edit the original title of the thread so this thread becomes the "official" poppy growers thread. Or maybe someone start a new thread for the new year and it will be an annual thread that changes every year. I think it would be better to have a single "official" poppy thread though instead of a new one ever year.

We should get the 2021 thread up and running, seems like planting season is upon us.

Man, I got a few pounds of baking poppy seeds and planted them out one year and the pods made me deathly sick. You never know what you're getting with baking seeds, alkaloid wise
