Grain contamination
    #27220616 - 02/22/21 04:17 PM (3 years, 1 month ago)

Hi guys!
It's been three weeks since I have inoculated a couple of jars. Some showed some signs of mycelium, other didn't even colonize. Today I throw out the ones that the grain did not colonize and they were really smelly and I could note like two different colors in the grain. Like there were some spots darker.
Then I had a look at the ones with micelyum growing and I realized that they also had these dark spots of grains. Here are some photos. What happened here? Is this bacterial contamination? Any explanation? Should I throw these jars too?

Thanks in advance.

It’s hard to tell from the pictures but the grain looks really wet inside some of the jars.  Were they completely dried before you put them in the PC?

It's brown rice. They were completely dry. All of a sudden those dark spots appeared. And yes, it is pretty wet now and smelly, dunno why :frown:
Thank you for your response.

Bacteria. That's what's turning your grains darker and making them stinky. Did you use a pressure cooker?

I did use a pressure cooker. What else could have originated bacterial contamination?
TIA!

The jars are too wet and the rice is oozing due to the bacteria.

Either you didn't pc the jars correctly or your syringe was infected.

How long did you PC? What PSI? How did you inoculate? What did you inoculate with? Where?

Even using a PC I have a theory some of the newer people don't get them properly vented so that it is completely full of steam and the jars and up bacterial because they never get to temp. Rice in a 2 hour PC cycle that's been properly vented with the 15lb rocker rocking the entire time would not be bacterial like that. Rice actually sterilizes faster than almost everything else due to low density.

Of course sometimes spore syringes are bacteria soup, ok usually they are. Sometimes you get lucky and get a clean one but it's rare.

I would get a pressure cooker and a bag of WBS and start again.

A question I have is why you chose to pc rice?
People use rice when they don't have a pc, ditch the rice and stick with millet or was mix.

I PC it for an hour. Dunno the PSI since I used an old PC. It's my second time maybe I was lucky the first one. I inoculated with a pink thai print from my last harvest. I made some syringes and I inoculated the jars with it. Do you think May it be worthy to do G2G with the grain that the contamination had not spread much?

Either your syringe was dirty or you need to vent or PC longer. You should really start using agar.

He has a pc which is why I asked his reasoning for using br over wbs.
Ditch the rice and stick the grain if you're pc'ing
