Why is insurance so confusing...

As most of you know, I broke my foot last week.. of course I have insurance so my wife called up to get some info.. our deductible is 3k. We pay 3k and they cover 90% of everything else. That's fucking great for serious situations. My foot is not serious..
So.. we decided to pay out of pocket.. I went to an urgent care center and then was referred to an orthopedic doctor.
I decided to call around since I'll be paying out of pocket..
The first person I called said I need to figure out what my Allowed Amount is.. she said it will help with what I have to pay out of pocket..
I get on the phone with my insurance company and explained to them the situation. She didn't understand what I was talking about. She then tells me I need to continue to pay until I reach the 3k mark..
No... I said.. my foot will not be more than 3k as I do not need surgery. I told her I will be paying out of pocket but would like to stay in house.. more confusion from both parties.
WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON!?
I need to see a fucking orthopedic doctor but I'm not going to pay the deductible..

I think what she was saying is whatever I pay it will automatically go towards the deductible, but I'm trying to pay the least amount...
I would just ride it out but I have documents that need to be signed for my fmla..

Its fucking mafia tactics. Did you know the prices will be different for the services to your foot depending if you have certain insurance or not?(happened with my jaw surgery, had to go through all sorts of shit just to end up getting a certain private insurance provider just long enough to cover the claim and then canceled) So fucked....

Yea that's exactly what she is saying. Even if you pay for everything out of pocket and it's less than your deductible, you should still file a claim on that and make sure that what you pay counts toward your plan max out of pocket expenses. That way if shit hits the fan later this year (major injury, vivid infection, etc.), you're that much closer to your out of pocket limits.
I'm pretty sure you can also claim some of these expenses on your tax return.

I break my foot they fix it and I don't have insurance. I literally have to pay out of pocket. but my pockets are more full from saving 100% on my insurance by not having any. So far I've spent less on my body than I would have paid in insurance so

That's def awesome for minor shit like broken foots, but what happens if you need surgery or you get cancer or some other horrible situation that lands you a GIGANTIC bill?
I know some rack up bills and ride those into the depths of hell, but others do not, especially with kids..

Yeah it is a really bad idea not to at least have catastrophic incident coverage
Depending on how poor you are you can often get a catastrophic policy for like 20 to 50 bucks a month

It's awesome that we get to talk about each other in the terms of how poor we are, instead of how wealthy we are.
Feels bad man.

So I'm firmly in the upper-middle class here in the US, and the high deductible plans that most companies are pushing these days are terrible for everyone.
Sure, they'll keep you alive and in debt for the rest of your life, but unless you have the extra income to dump into an HSA or FSA, or gap insurance to cover the difference, it discourages people who are minorly sick or injured from seeking medical attention.
Hell, the OP was considering riding out a broken foot. Depending on the break, they could be looking at long-term issues even after the break is healed, and their health insurance policy is the primary driver of that decision.
And the reason these are being pushed is because of the smaller contribution to the plan by the employer. I watched it happen over the last few years at my former company. They would introduce the high-deductible plans as a cheaper alternative for healthy young people, then slowly restructure the employer contribution until the lower deductible PPO plans were so expensive that nobody could afford them, and the high deductible plans (with the HSA/FSA required to make them work) were roughly the same price to the employee as the original PPO plans.
Do I make enough money to pay for healthcare? Sure I do. But I also realize that I'm not everyone, and that we are all getting fucked over by the healthcare system in it's current state in the US.
